Journal Bearing
Objective:
To determine the coefficient of friction of Journal Bearing.
Introduction
A bearing is a machine element which support another moving machine element (known as
journal). It permits a relative motion between the contact surfaces of the members, while carrying
the load. A little consideration will show that due to the relative motion between the contact
surfaces, a certain amount of power is wasted in overcoming frictional resistance and if the rubbing
surfaces are in direct contact, there will be rapid wear. In order to reduce frictional resistance and
wear and in some cases to carry away the heat generated, a layer of fluid (known as lubricant) may
be provided. The lubricant used to separate the journal and bearing is usually a mineral oil refined
from petroleum, but vegetable oils, silicon oils, greases etc., may be used. The purpose of
experiment is to find the coefficient of friction of bearing made up of various materials.
Procedure
Mount the material bearing assembly on the shaft.
Balance the shaft with the hanger on one side and rotating screw (tare Nut) on other side.
While balancing the assembly, the hanger has to be position at zero point on the scale
arm/upper arm.
Connect upper arm with the lower arm via aluminium wires.
Start the motor, so that friction force can be applied to the upper arm.
The Upper lever is balanced by moving hanger on the either side or by changing the load
in the hanger.
The scale arm should be balanced in horizontal position and the load on the hanger and
position of the hanger is noted for calculation
Calculations
Diameter of shaft = d = 38mm
Weight of hanger = F1 = 0.9N Load on Hanger = F2
Weight of load arm = WA = 14.7N Load on load arm = WB
Coefficient of friction μ = Friction Force/Reaction Force
