Semester 1 2021

ASSIGNMENT 1

Due date: 23rd of April 2021, 11.59pm

Candidates ID No: _________________________________

Candidates Name: _________________________________

MEE40003 MACHINE DYNAMICS 2 SEMESTER 1 2021

Instructions:

1. All questions must be answered.

2. State any appropriate assumption if necessary.
3. Show full solution (or codes) for each question.

This assignment is designed to provide an authentic learning experience through simulated

problem statement similar to those in real-world.

It should be made known that this assignment is purely fictitious and that any similarity in
names and/or problem posed is pure coincidence.

This assignment will be assessing your learning mastery in kinematics analysis and gear train
analysis through the following Unit Learning Outcomes (ULOs)

1. Analyse four bar mechanisms, machine components, and vibrations system (K1, K2, K3, S1,
S2) (EAC PO1).

3. Use practical engineering packages to determine force and moments in the linkage, cam,
gear and machine (K1, K2, K3, S1, S2) (EAC PO3).

5. Generate high quality reports (A2, A7) (EAC PO10).

6. Develop the expertise to handle a complex real-life problem (K2, K4, K6, S1, S2) (EAC PO3)

Marking summary for this assignment and its alignment to respective ULO is as presented
below. Detailed marking rubric is made available in Appendix 1 for your reference.

Pump jack is a driven mechanism, used in the oil field, to extract crude oil from oil well where there is
insufficient pressure in the well to force the oil to the surface. Pump jack is a rotary-reciprocal
application of a four-bar linkage. A pump jack typically consists of a long, heavy beam that is externally
powered. One end of the heavy beam is a series of rods known as sucker rods. As the beam rises and
falls, the series of sucker rods dips into and out of the well. The other end of the beam is connected
to a pulley system which provides the continuous movement of the pump jack.

MD Engineering and Consultancy is a company that specialise in pumping units such as pump jack used
in the petroleum industries. The company received a client request to troubleshoot one of their pump
jacks in Northeast Colorado. Figure 1 shows a pump jack used in the oil field that is to be troubleshot.

You have been assigned to the project team working on this assignment. As the junior engineer of the
project team, your project manager has assigned you to conduct a desktop kinematics and gear train
analysis prior entering the field. Dimensions of the pump jack is given as Appendix 2. All dimensions
are in metre.

One salient feature of the pump jack to allow for efficient pumping is that the end with sucker rods
are designed such that its tangent is always parallel to the Y axis. The engineers on the field has
measured positions P1 as (2.91, 0.84) and P2 as (2.55, 1.11) with respect to xy coordinate system.
MEE40003 MACHINE DYNAMICS 2 SEMESTER 1 2021

Your tasks are to

1) Determine the angles that the crank (link 2) makes with the position X axis when links 2 and 3
are in toggle positions.
2) Based on P1 and P2 coordinates in xy coordinate system, analyse the position of P1 and P2 in
the XY coordinate system and evaluate if this salient feature is maintained.
3) Consider the crank to move at a constant velocity of 10 rad/s. Write a MATLAB code to
compute the angular positions, velocities, and accelerations for link 3 and 4, as a function of
link 2 angles in the XY coordinate systems.
4) Considering the gearbox used in driving the crank is a compound gear train. Dimensions of
the gear train is given in Appendix 3. Calculate what is the velocity ratio, and required angular
velocity (input) to drive the crank. Express your angular velocity in rpm.
5) Conclude your analysis and submit in proper report format.
