thoughts, and emotions
of man.

-can be written or oral

refers to any
sort of work that Genres of Literature
share certain
characteristics.

'kind' or 'type'
PHILIPPINE
LITERATURE
Philippine Literature is the body of
works, both oral and written, that
Filipinos whether native,
naturalized or foreign born have
created about the experience of
people living in or relating the
Philippine Society.
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD
Riddles- are brief verses, often puzzling questions of
every phase of Filipino life.

Proverbs- are wise sayings. These are also brief prose


statments about practical observations in life.

Lyric or Folk songs- are stories about traditions,


beliefs, and customs intended for singing and not for
narrating.

Oyayi- lulling the baby to sleep


Kundiman- love songs (awit ng pag-ibig)
Kumintang/Tagumpay- war song (awit pandigma)
Suliranin- workers song (awit ng manggagawa)
Talindaw- boat song(awit ng pamamangka)
Dalit/imno- songs for the gods and goddesses (awit ng
diyos-diyosan ng mga Bisaya)
PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD
Epics- are long narrative poems that recount the
adventures of tribal heroes or supernatural events.

Biag-ni-Lam-ang - Ilocano
Hudhud - Ifugao
Ibalon - Bicol
Bantugan - Muslim Darangan
Hinilawod - Panay
Tuwaang - Central Mindanao

Myths- are sacred stories of happenings in the remote


past. These are stories usually associated with
theology and rituals. (gods and goddesses)

Legends- are stories about the origin of things.

Folktales- are stories of animals, magic, romance,


virtues, jokes. They often deliver a moral in the end.
Corrido- Legendary religious
poems about courtly love and
chivalric adventures.

Awit- narrative poem of European


setting but the tale itself is the
writer's creation.

Moro-Moro- is a blood thunder


melodrama that revolves around
the struggle between Muslims and
Christians, with the Christians
emerging as victors.

Carillo- a shadow play. It is a


puppet play.
Tibag- a religious festival
celebrated in May by communities
which have devotion to the holy
Cross. It is a re-enactment of St.
Helena's search for the cross of
Christ.

Zarzuela- a musical comedy or


melodrama in three acts,
highlights the social or political
problems of the day.
-Doctrina Christiana- first book
ever published in the Philippines.
