Chapter 11 – Time and Temperature

Time is measured with the help of a clock.

• A clock usually has two hands :- the short hand → the hour hand
the long hand → the minute hand
• The hour hand takes 12 hours to complete one round.
• The hour hand moves around the clock twice in one day. 1 day = 24 hours The
minute hand takes I hour (60 minutes) to complete one round.
• There are 5 minutes between two consecutive numbers on the clock.
• We use a.m. (anti meridian) for the time after 12 midnight and before 12 noon.
• We use p.m. (post meridian) for the time after 12 noon and before 12 midnight.

NOTE:- We do not write a.m. or p.m. for 12 o’clock midnight

and 12 noon.

Fill in the blanks:-

1) 1 hour = 60 minutes → 0’ clock
2) Quarter hour = 15 minutes → Quarter past
3) Half an hour = 30 minutes → Half past
4) Three quarter hour = 45 minutes → Quarter to

24 hour clock
We normally use 12 hours to measure the time. Air services, Railways, Television,
Network throughout the world use the 24 hour clock. Under this system, 4 digits are used to
indicate the time. The first two digits show the hours and the last two digits show the
minutes.

Interchanging Units
I. To convert a bigger unit into a smaller unit, we multiply.

1) How many minutes are there in 9 hours? Ans:- 1
hour = 60 minute
9 hours = (9 × 60) minutes

 = 540 minutes
2) Change 3 hour 25 minutes to minutes
Ans:- 1 hour = 60 minutes
3 hour 25 minutes = (3 × 60) min + 25 min
= 180 min + 25 min
= 205 minutes
3) How many seconds are there in 5 minutes?
Ans:- 1 minute = 60 seconds
5 minutes = (5 × 60) sec
= 300 seconds
4) Convert 8 min 13 sec to seconds Ans:- 1 minute = 60
seconds
8 min 13 seconds = (8 × 60) sec + 13 sec
= 480 sec + 13 sec
= 493 seconds

. To convert smaller units to bigger units, we divide.

Ans:- 1 minute = hours 60 420
420 minutes = hours 420
= 7 hours 0
2) How many hours will make 135 minutes? 2
Ans:- 1 minute = hours 60 135
135 minutes = hours 120
= 2 hours 15 minutes 15
3) How many minutes are there in 1800 seconds? 30
Ans:- 1 second = minutes 60 1800
1800 seconds = minutes 180
= 30 hours 0

4) How many minutes will make 375 seconds? 6
Ans:- 1 second = minutes 60 375
375 seconds = minutes 360
= 6 hours 15 minutes 15

Temperature

 Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness of a body, object or substance.
 Thermometer is an instrument used for measuring temperature.
 Two scales are used to measure temperature.
a) Celsius scale (° C which is read as ‘ degree Celsius’)
b) Fahrenheit scale (° F which is read as ‘ degree Fahrenheit’)

Freezing point of water = 0°C = 32°F

Boiling point of water = 100°C = 212°F

Measuring Body Temperature

 The temperature of the human body is measured with clinical thermometer.

 The range of temperature in a clinical thermometer is 35°C to 42°C.  The normal body temperature
of a healthy person is 37°C (98.6°F).
