The Clock

This is the picture of a clock. It has 12 numbers and 3 hands.

Second hand:

• The very thin long hand is called the second hand. It

represents seconds in the clock.
• It is the fastest moving hand in the clock.
• It completes one round in 1 minute or 60 seconds.

Minute hand:

• The long thick hand is called the minute hand. It represents

minutes in the clock.
• It moves slower as compared to second’s hand and faster as
compared to hour hand.
• When the minute hand completes one round of the clock, an
hour gets completed.
• On the clock, there are equal markings between 2 adjacent
numbers. Each marking stands for a minute.
• When minute hand moves from one number on the clock to
the consecutive number, it shows 5 minutes.

Minute Hand

Two consecutive
numbers represent
5 minutes. Each
marking between
two consecutive
number represents
a minute.
Hour hand:

• The shortest, thick hand is called hour hand.

• When hour hand completes one round on the clock, 12 hours
get completed.
• It is the slowest moving hand on the clock.

Hour Hand

By completing one round

on the clock, the hour hand
completes 12 hours

At a glance:
1 day = 24 hours

1 hour = 60 minutes

1 minute = 60 seconds

1 quarter = 15 minutes

4 quarters =(4 x 15 minutes) = (60 minutes or 1 hour)

6 minutes to 4

The Concept of a.m. and p.m.

Did you know?

a.m. stands for ante-meridiem

p.m. stands for post-meridiem

Draw hands on the clock according to the given passed time and
write the time.

2 hours

4:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m.

4 hours

11:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.

Word Problem
Ruchika went to a library at 09:30 a.m. She spent 6 hours there. At
what time did she leave from the library?

Solution:

Time at which she went to the library= 09:30 a.m.

Total time spent in the library= 6 hours

Time at which she left the library=

09:30 a.m. 6 hours 03:30 p.m.

Answer: She left the library at 03:30 p.m.

Conversions of Time

1 year= 12 months

1 year= 365 days

1 month= 4 weeks

1 month= 30 days

1 week= 7 days

1 day= 24 hours

1 hour= 60 minutes

1 minute= 60 seconds
Exercise
Convert the following into days.

1) 3 years

1 year= 365 days

3 years= 3 x 365 days

= 1095 days

Ans) 3 years= 1095 days

2) 12 months

1 month= 30 days

12 months= 12 x 30 days

= 360 days

Ans) 12 months= 360 days

3) 20 weeks

1 week= 7 days

20 weeks= 20 x 7 days

= 140 days

Ans) 20 weeks= 140 days

Convert into months.

1) 11 years

1 year= 12 months

11 years= 11 x 12 months

= 132 months

Ans) 11 years= 132 months

2) 14 years

1 year= 12 months

14 years= 14 x 12 months

= 168 months

Ans) 14 years= 168 months

Convert the following.

1) 4 days into hours

1 day= 24 hours

4 days= 4 x 24 hours

= 96 hours

Ans) 4 days= 96 hours

2) 12 hours into minutes

1 hour= 60 minutes

12 hours= 12 x 60 minutes

= 720 minutes

Ans) 12 hours= 720 minutes

3) 50 minutes into seconds

1 minute= 60 seconds

50 minutes= 50 x 60 seconds

= 3000 seconds

Ans) 50 minutes= 3000 seconds

Write these time in minutes.

1) 6 h

1 h= 60 min

6 h= 6 x 60 min

= 360 min

Ans) 6 h= 360 minutes

2) 3 h 17 min
1 h= 60 min

3 h= (3 x 60) min + 17 min

= 180 min + 17 min

= 197 min

Ans) 3 h 17 min= 197 min

Word Problem

Ravi finished a 400 m race in 4 minutes 24 seconds. How many

seconds did he take to finish the race?

Solution:

Time taken to finish the race= 4 minutes 24 seconds

1 minute= 60 seconds

Total time taken in seconds= (4 x 60) seconds + 24 seconds

= 240 seconds + 24 seconds

= 264 seconds

Ans) Ravi took 264 seconds to finish the race.

24-Hour Clock
12-hour and 24- hour Clock Time
a) The hour hand of the clock goes round the clock twice a day,
that is, 24 hours.

b) The 24-hour clock does not use a.m. and p.m.

c) In 24-hour clock system, we express time in four digits.

d) The first two digits represent hours and last two digits represent
minutes.

e) Observe the time shown in the given clock.

Conversion of 12-hour Clock to 24-hour Clock and vice

versa.
a) If the time is given in a.m., then there is no change and a.m. is
replaced by hours.
For example, 9:45 a.m. is written as 09:45 hours.

b) If the given time is in p.m., then add 12 to the time and replace
p.m. with hours.

For example, 8 p.m. is written as 8:00 + 12:00 = 20 hours. Thus, 20

hours mean 8 O’clock in the evening.

8 O’clock in the morning, we write as 08:00 hours.

c) To change from 24-hour clock time to 12-hour clock time, if the

given time is equal or less than 12 hours, then there is no change.
Replace hours by a.m.

For example, 06:00 hours = 06:00 a.m.

d) To change from 24-hour clock time to 12-hour clock time, but

if the given time is more than 12 hours, then subtract 12 from the
time and replace hours with p.m.

For example, 17:15 hours = 17:15 – 12 = 5:15 p.m.

Exercise
Convert the following 12-hour clock time to 24-hour clock time.

• 4:00 a.m.

Ans) 4:00 a.m. = 04:00 hours

• 3:45 a.m.

Ans) 3:45 a.m. = 03:45 hours

• 11:45 p.m.

11:45 p.m. = 11:45 + 12 = 23:45 hours

Ans) 11:45 p.m. = 23:45 hours

• 7:45 p.m.

7: 45 p.m. = 7:45 + 12 = 19:45 hours

Ans) 7:45 p.m. = 19:45 hours

Convert the following 24-hour clock time to 12-hour clock time.

• 05:45 hours

Ans) 05:45 hours = 5:45 a.m.

• 02:55 hours

Ans) 02:55 hours = 02:55 a.m.

• 17:45 hours

17:45 hours = 17:45 – 12 = 5:45 p.m.

Ans) 17:45 hours = 5:45 p.m.

• 21:15 hours
21:15 hours = 21:15 – 12 = 9:15 p.m.

Ans) 21:15 hours = 9:15 p.m.
