INTRODUCTION

In a world where environmental sustainability is supreme, addressing the issue of

waste has become more critical than ever. Every year, millions of tons of waste end
up in landfills, polluting our land, water, and air. This not only harms ecosystems but
also poses significant threats to human health.
Fortunately, there's a solution within our reach: raising awareness about waste
reduction. By educating ourselves and our communities about the importance of
reducing waste and adopting sustainable practices, we can make a tangible difference
in preserving our planet for future generations.
What is waste
management

Waste management is the collection,

transport, recovery, recycling or disposal
of waste.
Why is disposal of waste a problem?
Disposal of waste is a problem because of the amount of waste generated.
Wrong methods of disposal harms the environment
If waste is burnt it leads to air pollution
If waste is disposed on land it affects the ground water and soil
If waste is thrown in water bodies it pollutes them
Segregation
-separation of wet and dry waste

Waste has different methods of disposal.

Making it easier to dispose the wastes.
Biodegradable waste

Wastes that can be decomposed and

mixed with soil are known a
biodegradable wastes.
Types-
Kitchen waste- remains of vegetables,
egg shells, bones and meat.
Garden waste- flowers, twigs, wood.
Paper, natural fibre cloth and cardboard.
How To Manage Waste

We can do waste management in the following ways

Reduce: Use fewer disposable items and choose products with minimal packaging.
Reuse: Find creative ways to repurpose items, like using old containers for storage or crafts.
Recycle: Learn about materials that can be recycled, such as paper, plastic, and glass. Set up
recycling bins and separate recyclables.
Composting: Turn fruit peels and vegetable scraps into nutrient-rich soil for plants.
Dispose Properly: Use bins correctly for general waste and take hazardous materials, like
batteries, to designated collection points.
Educate Others: Share knowledge about waste management practices with friends and
family, encouraging them to follow suit.
Conclusion

The world is facing significant challenges in the management of waste due to its large
population and the huge amount of trash it generates. India must improve its recycling
industry, as only 5% of recycled material is currently reused. Solving these problems
is crucial for a sustainable future and environmental protection.
To move forward, we need to plan for long-term management of waste and adapt
strategies for changing lifestyles. Household and institutional waste must be separated
at the source to make recycling more efficient.
