Part 1: Lesson Overview

Instruction Time and Place: Number and Grouping of Students for Instruction: Date: Grade:
11/7/23 1st
Learning Segment Topic: Subtraction
Lesson Topic: Subtracting whole numbers within 10

Part 2a: Target Student Learning Standards

Standard Code 1.OA.C.6
Operations & Algebraic Thinking
Subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as
decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the
relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12
– 8 = 4).

In this lesson,

Misconceptions: A misconception would be students not knowing the bigger number comes first in a
subtraction equation (ex: thinking 2-7 is the same as 7-2). Students do not understand that they can also use
the “counting on/up” strategy in subtraction.
