“Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration” (Thomas Edison). Nearly a hundred
years ago, these words left the mouth of the famous inventor: Thomas Edison. A hundred years came to pass, and the quote still persists today, unchanging and unyielding to the test of time. The quote simply wishes to deliver this message: great accomplishments in any realm of human endeavor, lie not only in ingenuity but also in hard, and grueling work. Work that not all will take. Work, that many are afraid to even think about. Work, the fear of every man, or woman that has yet to achieve a great feat in their lives. But, as Edison’s quote implies, in order to achieve, to decimate, and to conquer you have to burn the midnight oil every now and then, to do the things many would stray from. This would mean sacrificing your time, energy and effort as you cannot conquer your goals just by easily snapping your fingers; you have to gather yourself together and exert tremendous effort. Success is not like an instant noodle that you can enjoy after a short span of time. It involves 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration, and even after all of that, it still takes a long time to achieve. But always remember that those who dream and work will have a bright and clear future ahead. The quote presents an interesting perspective, and it can be summed up to this: those who can dream, sweat for that dream, and take the extra steps can, and will decimate any and all goals come what may. Remember that last one, those.who.take.the.extra.steps, and today, we, the disciples of Edison’s quote, decided to take that extra step as we stepped foot into the AVR of Northeastern College to tackle our next challenge head on: A seminar titled. " From data to destiny: A comprehensive overview on a statistical tools, Table of Specification and test construction" We are are the students from block D98, and this, is our story. First things first, we were obliged to register our names for documentation of who attended the seminar. At exactly 8:45 the seminar is officially started hosted by Roxanne Jade Dela Rosa an Elementary major and a 3rd year representative and Charles Lawrence Literal an English major and a finance secretary in Young mentor's Club. While waiting for the guest speakers to come. Roxanne did an interview to the participants first. And as expected, the answers of those students are to learn and gain knowledge and skills regarding to the mentioned topics. Afterwards, we solemnly request the presence of the Lord through a simple prayer led by Hannah Braga a YMC Vice Governor and followed by National Anthem led by Rizza Castro, a Math major. And we sang the NC hymn gracefully. To finally open the program, Sir Melvin Kingson Dumelod gave his message to the participants to encourage them to listen and participate attentively and also to officially open the seminar. "You are trainable and you can also train other people" that is the statement quoted by the Dean of the College of Education, Dean Saranay I. Dayaoen. MS-MATH, CPA. Through this seminar, we are given opportunity to learn new ideas and explore more in the world of research that we can use in our future careers. As an educator, our paramount concern is the future of our learners. To become Nurtured and Competitive individual. After they formally opened the program of the seminar they introduced the first speaker of the day. The first speaker was Sir Bryan Carlo R. Responso, Teacher III teaching in Jones Rural School at Jones Isabela. Sir Responso graduated at Philippine Normal University North Luzon, Alicia, Isabela and he graduated as Magna Cum Laude. So before he finally starts the lectures he let us play first and he use Kahoot for that. The game is like a quiz bee and we play it by group and each group has 3 members. So, in this game the question is all about research and as you answer the question correctly you will be given a points and automatically place you according to the rank of your score. So, the game become more exciting as he said that the winners will be given a price. So at the end of the game the group TRES from math major (Kathleen Mesa, Glyzelle Magdangal, Dianabelle Pascual) got the rank 1, and the group of G from Elementary Major (Zheena Ringor, Dainalyn Aban, Geo Harlow Abaya) got the rank 2, and the group of ARC also from Elementary Education (Ronalie Mandac, Cherry Lyn Verbal, Amelita Porquillano) got the rank 3. And after they announced the winner, Sir Responso started the lecture with the research process. So while discussing, suddenly he asked where we are going to use statistics on the research process that being presented and everybody response is in number 3, but according to Sir Responso in the first step of research process we already using the statistics because we are already gathering data. He also stated that in making research is like doing also a lesson plan wherein you have an objectives that you need to follow to successfully made it. So he presented the SMARTER acronym which is most likely to the SMART acronym that we use in making learning objectives in a lesson plan. SMARTER means Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound, Evaluated, and Rewarding. He said that the word rewarding is not literal what the word means itself when we say rewarding it is the feeling of satisfaction and contentment because you successfully finished your goals. So after he presented the SMARTER, the lectures proceed in the two phase on how to achieve research question. The first phase is the design phase and in this phase in contains the quantitative, qualitative, and mix. Wherein he describes the quantitative and qualitative using memes, he said that based on the first pictures we can see a man wearing a business attire and that is what quantitative looks like its all about numbers, while on the other picture is a girl a "fashionista" when you called it, so he said that, it's how qualitative looks like because in qualitative we use extravagant words. The second phase is the data collection phase wherein in contains the independent and dependent. And after that he asked everyone on what measurement tools we can use in gathering data, some response was survey, observation, questionnaire, and too many to mention. And he said kiddingly that "basta private school talaga advanced mag-isip" and he said that the basic measurement tools that we can use is the ruler. And then he gives us some tips in encoding data, he told us what apps we can use to encode the gathered data, and also give as some tips on how to properly encode it. And then Sir Responso stated that " Research date is like a wild animal, you must tame it to understand it, or it will swallow you whole", because in data analysis it can be destroy while making it so we should know the process and how to analyze it so it won't be destroyed. And after that he discussed the statistical procedures and it includes here the descriptive and inferential. While discussing he also explained the difference of means for 2 independent group, this is the Independent T test, Mann-Whitney U Test and Cohen's D. And since that is what we need to use we introduced to us the JASP because according to him JASP contains that three test. So before he teach us on how to operate it he asked us what is the meaning of JASP and some students answered Jeffrey's Amazing Statistics Program and he said that "iba talaga pag nasa private school advanced mag isip" but after that he correct us he said that JASP stands for Just Another Statistical Program. And after that he start discussing the tool that is easy to use and the different way so that our data will be analyze thoroughly. And this statistical software is a big help and free to use. The second session focused on TOS or Table of Specifications and test construction, Covering key topics such as how to make TOS, Reliability, validity, fairness, bloom’s taxonomy, common observations of students on test questions, possible reasons for faulty test questions, factors to consider in preparing test questions, and characteristics of good test. This session was led by the Regional and National Trainor of crafting Table of Specifications and test construction and one of the writer under the new Matatag Curriculum that in lign in Assessment in Learning, Master Teacher II in Santiago City National High School in Santiago City, Mrs. Jackilyn Sanchez Medina Alambra. Mrs. Alambra begin her session by visualizing a picture, the picture contains one man and animals such as monkey, bird, penguin, elephant, fish, and dog. The man here is giving exam to the animals, he said to these animals that “For a fair exam selection everybody has to take the same exam: Please climb that tree”. Mrs. Alambra ask us on what did we observe on that picture. As we observe, The exam is not fair to everyone, maybe 5 out of 6 will climb the tree, and there’s a fish there. Do you think that fish will climb the tree? this picture reflects inside the classroom, we should have different standards for different students, because every students are not the same, they have different needs, they have different strengths and weaknesses. The true fair exam is the exam that are no biases, no discrimination, and it should be suitable for every students. After this, Mrs. Alambra begin the Table of specification and how to construct it. And She ensure that her objectives of this session was achieved, so that Mrs. Alambra gave a task to us to construct a TOS based on our field. We group as according to our majors, then after finishing the task that she gave to us, we present it in front. This session emphasized the importance of TOS in constructing a test and we learned how to distribute topics across different cognitive levels. It also enhance our assessment design skills and we can use this in the future for planning and fostering effective assessment. Before Mrs. Alambra proceed to the next topic on how to construct a test, she leaved a quotes, she said that “For every Problem there is a solution. If you are not part of the solution then you are the problem”. And we agree with this, we need to find solutions to every challenges or problems, every challenges can be addressed and resolve. We need to find solutions rather than contributing to difficulties and challenges. It is better to part of the solution than part of the problem. She also added the Factors to consider in preparing test questions, and these are the following; (1) Purpose of the test, we need to consider the learners knows already not what the learners didn’t know, as a teacher we need to measure what is intended to measure, (2) Time available to prepare administer and score the test, the test exam should be applicable to the time hours of the exam, and the exam should organize and clear, so that, the test takers should test on time, the teacher should prepare first the table of specification to target the learning areas and time spend, for example the objective type of the test.(3) Number of students to be tested, as a teacher we should consider the huge number of the students, for example, performance task, assessment type but it takes a lot of time, (4) Skill of the teacher in writing the test, this is very important in constructing a test exam, we as a teacher we should good in writing a test exam because if the exam have errors in writing the examiners couldn’t answer correct the exam test and (5) Facilities available in reproducing the test, . And the Characteristics of Good Test, these are as follows; (1) Validity, this is to measure what is intended to measure, what should need to measure?, It is the criteria of the content or the objective of the lesson. (2) Reliability, it is all about how the student consistent in the assessment test (3) Usability, we as a teacher we should practical in giving a test question, because if our question are not valid to our content the learning outcomes may not useable, (4) Scorability, we as a teacher should have criteria in scoring a test and it easy to score, and also the aswers are available, for example is the multiple choice,(5) Interpretability and (6) Economical. They expressed their appreciation to Ma’am. Jackilyn M. Alambra for her informative and open presentation, appreciating her ability to simplify complex concept. They presented her with a certificate as a token of appreciation for sharing her mastery with the attendees. A group photo was taken to commemorate the event, featuring the project director/instructor, Ma'am Dianna Jean A. Gayo, and Sir Melvin C. Dumelo, alongside the Dean of the College of Education, Ma'am Saranay I. Doyaoen. As we come to the end of the seminar, Ma’am Diana delivered her closing remarks to express appreciation and gratitude to the speakers for their insightful presentations and the students for our active participation throughout the seminar, and thus, marks the end of the 8 hours of learning. Here is a brief summary of the events that transpired: The seminar tackled statistical tools, the table of specifications (TOS), and test construction. The speakers were Sir. Bryan Carl P. Responso and Maam Jackilyn M. Alambra and they shared their expertise on the subject matter and engaged us in interactive and hands on activities. Sir Bryan Carl P. Responso taught us how to use the various statistical tools given to us to make the research process easier, faster, and more time efficient. On the other hand, Ma’am Jackilyn M. Alambra focused on the table of specifications (TOS) and test construction. She stated that the TOS serves as a blueprint for assessments and demonstrated how to construct it effectively. She highlighted the importance of factors such as the desired number of test items, allocation of time, and balancing the distribution of items. As for the test construction, she also discussed the elements to consider when preparing test questions and the characteristics of a good test. With a strong understanding of the principles and techniques shared by Ma'am Jackilyn, we are better equipped to create well-crafted test questions that effectively assess student learning, effectively making us become part of the solution in shaping the future of education. Now we have come to the end of our journey. It has armed us with a wealth of knowledge, instilled us a thirst for continuous learning and had emerged successful. The seminar "From Data to Destiny: A Comprehensive Overview of Statistical Tools, Table of Specification, and Test Construction" came to a spectacular close. Although the seminar came to pass, it didn’t take the lessons along with it; instead, those lessons stayed with us, here, in our hearts, and our minds. It was an amazing journey we had and we are grateful for this transformative experience, the memories made, and the lessons learned. We, as future educators are eager to apply the lessons learned in this seminar, hopefully in the very near future. In hindsight, It’s not too much of a stretch to say that it was a life-changing experience, seeing as it provided us with the knowledge and skills to harness the power of data and shape our own destiny, hence, the title: ‘’From data to destiny’’ .
