– Possible Questions during the Research Proposal –

1. in a few sentences, can you tell us what your study is all about?

Answer: Our study is about Public Speaking Anxiety and how it affects a student’s academic
performance. This study discusses what is public speaking anxiety and its cause and effect and
whom does it often affect.

2. what is your motivation of this study?

Answer: not only did we witness our classmates not actively participating in class, but we, the
researchers ourselves, has also experienced public speaking anxiety so we figured that in order
to understand what we go through whenever we are told to speak in front of many people, we
decided to conduct this study so we can also provide insights on how to improve public
speaking skills for many students and also for us.

3. how will this study contribute in the body of knowledge?

Answer: from the analysis in the conceptual framework, every issue that was stated in there all
leads back to the solution, the intervention. The proposed methods of how to improve one’s
public speaking skill is stated in the intervention part of this study and those methods are our
contribution for the body of knowledge.

4. what limitations did you encounter?

Answer: there were a lot of limitations that we faced but the most prominent one was the lack
of laptop to use at first.

5. what methods of sampling technique did you employ?

Answer: in this study, we used the stratified random sampling from the probability sampling
method.
6. why choose this method?

Answer: for research to be more reliable, it must be without bias. So, we for our research study
to be more credible, we decided to settle with the probability sampling method so we can
acquire the different sides of what we are trying to determine.

7. how would you summarize your study to a practitioner in a few sentences?

Answer: Our study is about Public Speaking Anxiety which is a phenomenon that cause
individuals- especially students- to hesitate and doubt themselves and their abilities to achieve
a certain goal or task. That doubt that was created due to public speaking anxiety then leads to
a decline in a student’s ability to socialize, make friends and participate in class discussions that
then affects their academic performance.

8. what would you change if you were to conduct the study again?

Answer: if we would be given the chance to change something in this study, it would be what
we do not know in how to create a research study. We had this research proposal checked
plenty of times because we can’t seem to get it right so it would be really nice if we are well-
equipped with knowledge already. That’s what I want to change in conducting this study if ever

9. what theories or theoretical framework is your study based on?

Answer: the theories that we used on this study is Albert Ellis’ Cognitive Learning Theory,
Sigmund Freud’s Object Relations Theory, and B.F Skinners Behavioral Learning Theory.

10. what is the scope of your study?

Answer: This study will be conducted only at jacinto p. elpa national high school among its 12 th
graders in the senior high school department
11. what is the research problem?

Answer: the problem of this study is the public speaking anxiety among students that leads to a
decline in their academic performance.

12. what are your research questions? Statement of the problem.

Answer:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents who are more inclined to
have anxiety in public speaking in regards to their:
a. Age
b. Sex
c. Learning Track
d. Personality Make-up
2. What manifestation of speech anxiety is mostly seen from the students?
3. What is the perception of the 12 th graders in Jacinto P. Elpa National High School
about speech anxiety?
4. What is the level of speech anxiety of 12 th graders in Jacinto P. Elpa National
High School?

A. How did your research questions emerge?

Answer: we based our research questions on the survey questionnaires from the conducted
research studies related to our topic.

B. Why are your research questions important?

Answer: Our research questions are important because it is our method of acquiring the answers
that will support what we are trying to prove in this study that Public Speaking Anxiety, indeed,
has an effect in the Academic Performance of the students.
13. Why is this problem that you are trying to tackle are worth tackling?

Answer: As stated by Pull of 2012, Public Speaking Anxiety is the most frequent form of social
anxiety that produces clinically severe distress and functional impairment in social, vocational,
and other areas. Because of this, interaction or socialization is prevented and will then cause
isolation amongst ndividuals who has this issue and more problems are then created with
isolation. This problem that we are trying to tackle is worth tackling for as we aspire to help
create a better reality for everyone without them being afraid to be judged. For our friends. For
our classmates. For other students. And for us.

14. How can you improve public speaking anxiety?

Answer: as stated by Jonelle Fagsao of 2021, public speaking anxiety can be improved through
educational and developmental activities such as practicing in front of small groups of peers or if
you are not close with anyone, you can also practice in front of the mirror while imagining that
you are speaking in front of a lot of people. Taking a deep breathe before speaking, all while
organizing your thoughts and focusing on your materials only and not on your audience, is of a
great help also and is proven to be effective.

15. Explain your statistical treatment of the data.

Answer: All in all, the population of 12th Graders here in Jacinto P. Elpa National is 369,
however, our former adviser, ma’am Edna La Torre has told us that we should limit our
respondents as we don’t have that much time. So, what we did was divide the 369 into two and
we came up with 184.5. But 184 is still too much so once again we divided the 184 into two and
we had the sum of 92. When we had 92, we divided it into 8, as per section, and we had the sum
of 11.5. As 11.5 is not divisible, we just round it off to 12 and when we had 12, we multiplied it
into 8 and we had 96. As 96 is divisible by 8, we just decided to stick with a sample size of 96 so
that we can have 12 respondents, 6 male and 6 female, from each 8 sections.

16. What is the significance of your study?

Answer: Our study is important because this aims to provide insights on how to improve
confidence and self-reliance, so that students can participate better and improve their academic
performance.

17. what is the purpose of Albert Ellis’ Cognitive Learning Theory in your study?

Answer: Public speaking anxiety takes away an individual’s ability to learn and comprehend and
as Albert Ellis’ Cognitive Learning Theory mainly focuses on Individual Learning, the purpose of
this theory in our study is to prove that PSA indeed has an effect in an individual’s own learning.

18. How did you come up with the conceptual framework?

Answer: Through careful deliberation, we first identified what our main topic is, then its cause
and effect which is the decline in confidence and participation that then leads to poor academic
performance. Finally, after we had all the problems sorted out, we arrived in the solution part
and that is the intervention.

19. How can you say that PSA indeed has an effect in the academic performance of a student?

Answer: According to Reumiyati of 2018, anxiety causes the pupils’ speaking ability to
deteriorate. With that proven statement, it clearly shows that public speaking anxiety affects a
students’ academic performance as their speaking skills gets worse due to anxiety when they
are tasked to speak in front of the class. It affects the academic performance as the hesitance to
reach out and interact leads to improper and not clear understanding of things.

20. What is the purpose of Sigmund Freud’s Object Relations Theory in your study?

Answer: As Object Relations Theory stresses the importance of interaction, the purpose of this
theory in our study is to show that PSA has a significant effect in an individual’s ability to
interact with other people.
21. What is the purpose of B.F Skinner’s Behavioral Learning Theory in your study?

Answer: The purpose of this theory is to explain the importance of one’s behavior and how
Public Speaking Anxiety influence it.

22. Who will benefit from your study?

Answer:

Students This study will serve as a guide for the students to identify their
struggles in class participation.

Teachers. This study will guide the teachers in identifying the reasons why their
students hesitate in participating in class and what they can do to improve their students
public speaking skills.

Parents. This study will serve as a guide for parents to be more supportive and
hands-on to the development of their children’s public speaking skills.

Future Researchers. This study will be available for them to use as their guide
for their own research when their time comes.

23. What are you trying to bridge in the gap of your study?

Answer:

In Jacinto P. Elpa National High School, there are no records of research

conducted yet that was done to closely study how public speaking anxiety – or anxiety
in general – affects the school’s students. Therefore, the researchers of this study
desires to fill that gap by identifying the causes of public speaking anxiety among our
fellow grade 12 students.
24. Why did you use that research methodology?

Answer:

We believed that we can collect more reliable data if we used the quantitative research design.

25. why do you think is your research reliable?

Answer: this research study is reliable because it used reliable sources for our chapter 2 and for
our statistical treatment, we used the probability sampling design which makes research more
trustworthy as there are no bias.

26. what source of data will be employed for the research?

Answer: Our primary source of data are the survey questionnaires that we will distribute to the
respondents. Then, we used secondary sources in the entirety in our chapter 2 and a few in our
chapter 1.

27. What is the strongest point in our study.

Answer: Own opinion.

28. what is the use of your definition of terms?

Answer: the purpose of the definition of terms is to provide insights on how we operationally
used those terms for our conceptual framework.

29. does psa always refer to public speaking competitions?

Answer: public speaking anxiety is not limited only at public speaking competitions. This also
includes hesitance in normal and needed interactions with other people that we all go through
daily. That seemingly simple conversation or interaction is affected as doing such requires an
individual to speak but they hesitate due to the anxiety.

30. why do you say that PSA is not only limited to the actual public speaking competition?

Answer: according to Azhari and Samadi (2014) the fear of public speaking, meeting new
people, eating or writing in front of others, and attending social gatherings are all examples of
social phobia. PSA belongs to the cluster of social phobias and that is our basis when we
claimed that PSA is not only limited to the actual speaking competition.
