and vice versa)

Word problems that requires thinking (involving models):

The mass of Bag A is 3/4 kg. Bag A is the heaviest. The difference between the masses of Bag A
and Bag B is 7/12 kg. Bag B is the lightest. The difference between the masses of Bag B and Bag C
is 1/6 kg. What is the mass of Bag C? Express your answer in its simplest form.

Chiang Heng places five poles A, B, C, D and E in order along a straight line. The distance between
poles A and D is 1 m. Poles A, B and C are 1/5 m apart from one another. The distance between
poles D and E is 7/10 m. How far apart are poles B and E? Give your answer as a mixed number in
its simplest form.

Decimals:

- Expressing a number in words as a decimal (i.e. 4 thousandths = 0.004)

- Place value
- 4 operations of decimals (+, - , x, divide)
- Rounding of to 1 and 2 decimal places
- Express a fraction as a decimal
- Dividing a decimal and expressing in 1 or 2 decimal places
- Word problems

Solving word problems that involves elimination of 1 variable using equations:

The cost of the entrance tickets to the zoo for 2 adults and 3 children is $78.80. The cost of the
entrance tickets for 1 adult and 1 child is $33.10. What is the cost of the entrance ticket for a
child?

2A + 3C = 78.80 ----- 1

1A + 1C = 33.10 ----- 2

Equation 2 x 2 throughout:

2A + 2C = 66.20 ------ 3

Equation 1 – Equation 3:

1C = 78.80-66.20 = 12.60, so cost of entrance ticket for a child is $12.60.
