This course introduces the students with the ‘keywords’ in architectural thought, such as
‘space’, ‘form’, ‘function’, ‘scale’, ‘movement’, ‘structure’, and ‘material’, along with concepts
architects think with, like ‘the user’, ‘the body’, ‘climate’, ‘nature’, ‘topography’, ‘context’, and
‘the city’, through the reading and discussion of selected text.
Parallel to this, the course also seeks to provide the students with fundamental tools and
methods to analyze and interpret architectural works within their
social/cultural/historical/urban/natural/technological contexts through fieldtrips and
consequent presentations & discussions of selected buildings or places in Istanbul.

Course Requirements:
• Students are expected to attend classes regularly, arrive on time, and not to leave until the
end.
•Students are expected to read the assigned material and be prepared for discussion before
each week’s class.
•Students are expected to participate in each fieldtrip. Fieldtrip destinations are tentatively
listed in the syllabus. Note that the destinations may change or other destinations may be added
to the list throughout the semester. Changes or additions will be announced before each trip in
class and/or via blackboard.
Students are required to do single and/or group-presentations throughout the semester. Groups
will have to be reformed anew at every other presentations. The presentations will form the
content of final logbook assignments.
Students are required to take notes and draw sketches during the course and site visits. Thi
material will be submitted at the end of the course with a Logbook.
