rules, however innocently, may be penalised. It is your responsibility to ensure that you understand correct
referencing practices. As a university level student, you are expected to use appropriate references throughout
and keep carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materials for material you have used in your work,
including any material downloaded from the Internet. Please consult the relevant unit lecturer or your course
tutor if you need any further advice.

Scenario
You are a technologist working at a power plant. Your supervisor asked
you to work on some practical calculations on a different type of electrical
power components such as power system protection. Try to use your
knowledge of the components of power system protection to simplify and
solve these calculations.

2
Task No 1:
1. For the network shown figure 1, perform the following tasks:
a. Sketch the zone of protection
b. Determine the main protection and back-up protection for each of the following
faults separately, F1, F2, and F3

Figure 1

3
2. Explain with illustrations the types of faults in electrical power systems.

3. For what type of protective relay will you recommend (i) an induction disc type (ii)
induction cup type construction?

4. Explain the classification of protective relays and different types of faults.

5. Determine the main protection and back-up protection of OC relay in the power system
network with the aid of suggestion the time grading

Task No 2:
1. What is meant by the ‘burden’ and ‘composite error’ of a CT?

2. Explain the Types of CT&VT Transformer Protection

3. Explain the difference between Measuring and Protective with CTs

4. The rated secondary current of a CT is 10 A. The plug setting of a relay is

6.75A. The power consumption of the relay at this plug setting is 8 VA.
Calculate the effective VA burden on the CT.

5. Explain with the illustration the working theory of voltage transformers.

6. Explain the deference between the symmetrical fault analysis and

unsymmetrical fault analyses in the protection system of power system.

7. Write a report on the different fault conditions that solar power plants are
exposed to when connecting to the grid from Ref. "Performance Enhancement
of PV Grid Connected Systems with Different Fault Conditions".

8. The rated current of an over-current relay is 5A and the current setting is at

200%. If the relay current is 150A, whereas the plug setting multiplier P.S.M. =
15, and if the C. T. is rated at 400/5. Calculate the fault current.

9. For the protection scheme Figure 2 and 3:

If the relay#1 has a T.S.M. equals 0.3 and the fault current is 4 kA. Identify the main and back-
up protective relays.
● Determine the following:
A. Plug setting multiplier (P.S.M.) of each relay.
B. The time of operation of each relay illustrating how the time-grading/Relay coordination
takes place.
4
C. The time setting multiplier (T.S.M.) of relay#2.

10. Write a report on the most important tests that are conducted on electrical
transformers, as well as transformer oils, citing a number of scientific articles.
Also, Explain the tests with CT&VT Transformer Protection.
