Remark To carry out the work described below two high pressure oil pumps of different designs are re-
quired. These oil pumps (tools 94942, 94931) have to be filled with engine oil having a viscosity
of SAE 30 to SAE 40 before starting them up.
In exceptional cases the hydraulic unit 94942 can be filled with cylinder lubricating oil.
Do not carry out grinding, burning, or welding near the workplace!
Prior to removing or fitting the locking elements, the surface of the camshaft section concerned
must be cleaned and possible scores must be smoothed.
The positions of the flange couplings with regard to the camshaft, and the distance of the damper
coupling from the end of camshaft should be marked before the removal!

Removing and Fitting of Hydraulic Locking Elements

Removing of the actuator cams

– As shown in Fig. ’B’, move the hydraulic jacking tool 94424, with ring piece 3 fitted, against the cam to be loos-
ened.
– Screw in and tighten connecting branch 94426 as shown in Fig. ’B’.
– Screw in by hand equally, but do not tighten, screws 4 (6 pieces) with washers 4a for fastening the hydr. jacking
tool 94424 to the cam.
– Connect the HP oil pump 94931 by high pressure hoses 94935, as well as the connection piece 94934a by HP
hoses 94935a to connection ’W’ and hydraulic unit 94942 to connection ’H’ by HP hose 94435 as shown in Fig.
’B’. The free connection must be plugged with closing piece ’P’ on the connection piece 94934a.
– Open vent screw ’E’ on hydr. jacking tool 94424, and actuate HP oil pump 94931 until the oil flows out bubble-
free. Shut vent screws and continue with pumping until all pistons 5 are retracted.
– Tighten screws 4 evenly by hand.

Attention Danger of accident! The following order of actuating HP oil pump and valve unit must be fol-
lowed!
The oil pressure in the hydr. jacking tool 94424 may not exceed 250 bar.
– Actuate HP oil pump 94931 until the pressure in the jacking tool (connection ’W’) reaches about 90 bar.
– Actuate the hydraulic unit 94942 until oil is squeezing out around the whole circumference between bush 9 and
cam 2.
– When oil squeezes out all around the circumference of the press seats the oil pressure in the hydr. jacking tool
can slowly be reduced – while the hydraulic unit is kept in operation – with the relief valve ’V’ at the HP oil pump
whereupon the cam will loosen. Dismantle the hydr. jacking tool.
– Attach suspension strap 94431 to the actuator cam as shown in the illustration on the last page in this group and
remove the cam by means of a lifting tackle.

Fitting of the actuator cams

– Clean all seating faces.
– Slide cam 2 and bush 9 onto the shaft until the bush is flush with the turned groove outside (see detail in Fig. ’B’).
– Move the hydr. jacking tool 94424, with ring piece 3 fitted, against bush 9 as shown in Fig. ’B’. Screw all screws 4
(6 pieces) with washers 4a in the cam and tighten them evenly by hand.
– Screw in and tighten connecting branch 94426 as shown in Fig. ’B’.
– Connect the HP oil pump 94931 to connection ’W’, and the hydraulic unit 94942 to connection ’H’.
– Open vent screw ’E’ on the hydr. jacking tool 94424 (see Fig. ’A’) and actuate HP oil pump 94931 till oil flows out
bubble-free. Shut vent screws.
– Pressurize connection ’H’ with the hydraulic unit 94942 until oil is squeezing out around the whole circumfer-
ence between bush 9 and cam 2. At the same time, slowly increase pressure in the jacking tool by means of the
HP oil pump.
– The pressure at connection ’H’ continually rises to about 900 bar. During the whole fitting procedure oil must
always squeeze out between bush and cam!
– The end position is reached when the cam is flush with bush 9. Now first release oil pressure at connection ’H’
and only about 30 seconds later the pressure at hydr. jacking tool.
– Dismantle the hydr. jacking tool.

Remark When replacing an actuator cam 2, its bush 9 must be replaced at the same time. Both parts form
one unit and must not be interchanged. For spares orders bush and cam are always supplied
together.

– Actuate the hydraulic unit 94942 until oil is squeezing out around the whole circumference between sleeve 7
and bush 8.
– Attach suspension strap 94431 to the fuel cam as shown in the illustration on the last page in this group and
remove the cam by means of a lifting tackle.

Fitting of the fuel cams

– Clean all seating faces.
– Slide fuel cam 1 with its bush 8 onto sleeve 7 of the reversing servomotor. Make sure fuel cam and bush are
flush. Fit intermediate ring 94424a
– As shown in Fig. ’C’, move the hydr. jacking tool 94424 against the cam, and screw the connecting branch
94426 in the sleeve 7 and tighten it. Open vent ’E’.

Removing and Fitting of Hydraulic Locking Elements

Adjusting the fuel cam and the actuator cam

If a cam has to be adjusted (turned), the corresponding roller guide above the cam must be lifted.

Adjustment of the fuel cam 1:

– As shown in Fig. ‘D’ (view I), screw the connecting branch 94427 in the fuel cam 1, and connect the hydraulic
unit 94942 to connection ‘H’, using the HP hose 94935.
– Check whether the guide plates 10 (two pieces) are laterally screwed on the sleeve 7.
– Screw the cam setting template 94432 on the corresponding inspection hole of the pump housing 11.
– Slowly increase the pressure in the hydraulic unit 94942.
The approximative pressure for turning a fuel cam is 1100 bar. By means of the round bar 94432a the fuel cam 1
can be adjusted by the desired value.
– After turning a fuel cam, check the adjustment of the corresponding injection pump timing as described in group
5512–1.

Adjustment of an actuator cam 2:

– Bring the piston of the cylinder concerned to T.D.C. (the peak of the actuator cam is orientated towards the
bottom).
– As shown in Fig. ‘D’ (view II), screw the connecting branch 94427 in the camshaft 6 to the actuator cam 2 con-
cerned, then connect the hydraulic unit 94942 to connection ‘H’, using the HP hose 94935.
– Fit the side stop 94432c for the actuator cam to the oil trough 16.
– Screw the cam setting template 94432 on the corresponding inspection hole of the pump housing 11.
– Fit the plug spanner 94432b to the actuator cam 2.
– Using the mark on the plug spanner as a reference, the present position of the cam centre with regard to the
B.D.C. of the actuator cam can be read on the scale of the cam setting template. If the mark ‘M’ on the plug
spanner 94432b (Fig. ‘D’) is above the 0° mark (‘retard’ direction) of the cam setting template 94432, it means
that the cam centre is after B.D.C.. If, however, the mark ‘M’ on the plug spanner is below the 0° mark (‘advance’
direction), the cam centre consequently is before B.D.C..
If the plug spanner indicates precisely zero, then the actuator cam is in ‘zero position’, where both marks ‘M’ at
the actuator cam must be horizontal (= check).
– For a correct exhaust valve timing adjustment, the actuator cam must correspond to the position specified by
the engine manufacturer (see setting table). The setting table normally describes the piston position of the cyl-
inder concerned with the expression “before/after T.D.C.”, where the cam actuator is in the ‘zero position’ men-
tioned above. Accordingly, the drive gear of the engine is to be turned to the recorded position, the actuator cam
being shifted as far as the ‘zero position’ is reached.
– For adjusting (turning) an actuator cam 2 slowly increase the pressure in the hydraulic unit 94942.
The approximative pressure is 900 bar.

Attention Before pressurizing the fuel cam (view I) or actuator cam (view II), check carefully whether the
guide plates 10 (two pieces) are screwed to the side of the sleeve 7 or the side stop 94432c to the
actuator cam is fitted to the oil trough 16. They prevent sideways slipping of the fuel cam or the
actuator cam during the cam shifting. Their presence is therefore essential for safety reasons.
After cam shifting the side stop to the actuator cam is to be removed immediately.
For adjusting the actuator cam connecting branch 94427 is always to be used screwed into the
camshaft 6.

Attention Danger of accident! The following order of actuating HP oil pump and valve unit must be fol-
lowed!
The oil pressure in the hydr. jacking tool 94424 may not exceed 250 bar.
– Actuate HP oil pump 94931 until the pressure in the jacking tool (connection ’W’) reaches about 160 bar.
– Actuate the hydraulic unit 94942 until oil is squeezing out around the whole circumference between bush 14
and coupling 12.
– When oil squeezes out all around the circumference of the press seats the oil pressure in the hydr. jacking tool
can slowly be reduced – while the hydraulic unit is kept in operation – with the relief valve ’V’ at the HP oil pump
whereupon the flange coupling will loosen. Dismantle the hydr. jacking tool.

Fitting of the flange coupling with bush

– Clean all the seating faces.
– Slide the flange coupling 12 onto the shaft, together with bush 14.
– Screw the connecting branch 94426 in the flange coupling and tighten it.
– Position the flange coupling with bush onto the camshaft. Pay attention to the marks on bush, coupling and
camshaft.
– Set in the centring disc 94428 at the end of camshaft.
– Using screws 4 fasten the hydraulic jacking tool 94424 with screwed-on guide ring 94424b to the flange cou-
pling 12, as shown in Fig. ’E’; tighten the screws slightly by hand only.
– Open vent ’E’ and tighten all the screws 4 evenly, taking care that the distance between jacking tool and flange
is about the same around the entire circumference (Fig. ’E’).
– Connect the HP oil pump 94931 to connection ’W’, and the hydraulic unit 94942 to connection ’H’.
– Pressurize connection ’H’ with the hydraulic unit 94942 until oil is squeezing out around the whole circumfer-
ence between flange coupling 12 and bush 14. At the same time, slowly increase pressure in the jacking tool by
means of the HP oil pump.
– While doing so, pressure at connection H continuously rises up to approx. 1900 bar. During the positioning
process oil must always be coming out between bush and flange coupling!
– When the final position is reached, i.e. flange coupling 12 is flush with the end of camshaft and the bush, first
release the oil pressure at connection ’H’, then, after about 30 seconds only, let out the pressure in the hydraulic
jacking tool.
– Dismantle the jacking tool and check the position of the flange coupling with the mark.
