HOW DIFFERENT

CULTURES
CONTRIBUTED TO OUR
UNDERSTANDING OF SPACE

Our understanding of space has be changed and pieced together from

many different cultures from all different time periods. From the Ancient
Egyptians to Aboriginal Australians, many cultures have contributed to
our overall understanding of space.

ANCIENT CHINESE
The Ancient Chinese were well known for
carefully recording all their celestial observation.
They also believed that the heavens were based
on simple or complex but predictable patterns
with maths, and took careful measurements to
make sure their estimates were accurate.

ISLAM
The Islamic religion states that Allah allows them to
venture into space, so they were curious about space
and beyond, so they produced masses of largely
accurate and sophisticated work, which greatly
affected our understnading of space at that time.

ANCIENT GREEK
Ancient greeks were one of the first people to
study the heavens, and were the first to realiise
that Earth is a three dimensional spherical object.
They also developed a theory that everything
else in space orbits the Earth.

ABORIGINAL AUSTRALIAN
They noticed the changing positions of the stars
at different times and noted them as the stars
moved across the sky relative to other stars

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN
Ancient egyptians believed that space was a huge metal
bowl that when damaged, hurled shards at Earth. Their
understanding of space was largely based on beliefs,
such as that you would travel through that bowl to reach
the afterlife. However, they also took careful notes of the
stars and other celestial bodies that were visible.
ANCIENT MAYA
They developed a system to predict eclipses and
their knowledge of space was very advanced for
their time. They also used calanders that were
nearly as precise as ones of nowdays, and used
them to predict when to harvest or grow crops.

Overall, many different cultures have come together to produce our

current understanding of space, as just because they did not have
advancedequipment doesn’t mean that they can’t equally as well
observe the heavens.
