second. Calculate the how far it goes before stopping.

(b) Janet hurls a ball horizontally at speed of 10 m s -1 from a bridge 50 m above a river. By
neglecting air resistance,
i) how long will it take for the ball to hit the water?
ii) calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the ball just before it lands.

(a) FIGURE 1 shows two discs with the same mass travelling perpendicularly to each other.
Disc A travelling with a constant velocity of 50 m s -1 to the right. Disc B has a velocity
of 40 m s -1 just before it hits the disc A and stuck to disc A. Determine the combine
speed of the disc and the direction of the motion after the collision.

(b) FIGURE 2 shows two blocks of masses 4 kg and 5 kg are connected with each other
and moves with the same acceleration on a frictionless horizontal surface. A constant
horizontal force 30 N is applied to the block of mass 5 kg.

ii) Calculate the tension in the cord connecting them.

(c) At sea level, a nitrogen molecule in the air has kinetic energy of 6.2 10−21 J . Its mass is
4.7 10−26 kg. If the molecule could shoot straight up without striking other air molecules,
how high would it rise?

A large bowl is made from a part of a hollow sphere. A small spherical ball is placed
inside the frictionless bowl and is given a horizontal speed. The ball follows a horizontal
circular path of constant radius as shown in FIGURE 4(a). The ball moves in a circular
path of radius 14 cm at an angle 30o to the vertical as shown in FIGURE 4(b). Calculate
the speed of the ball.

A simple pendulum consists of a 35 g mass tied to the end of a light string 650 mm long.
The mass is drawn to one side until it is 10 mm above its rest position, as shown in
FIGURE 5. When released, it swings with simple harmonic motion.
(a) Calculate the frequency of the pendulum.
(b) Calculate the maximum speed of the mass during the first oscillation.
(c) Sketch a graph of kinetic energy against displacement

7. (a)The water waves in Mira Lake is represented by the equation

y = 0.60 sin(20t − 4.0 x)

where x and y are in meters and t is in seconds.


i) Calculate the velocity of the water waves.
ii) A surfer is surfing on the water waves in Mira Lake. When the surfer is at the
position 𝑥 = 1.6 𝑚 at the instant 𝑡 = 60 𝑠, determine the displacement of the
surfer and the speed of the surfer.
iii) Write an equation which represents the water waves in Lyra Lake which have
the same frequency as the water waves in Mira Lake but the amplitude is half of
that in Mira Lake and propagates at a speed twice of that in Mira Lake in the
opposite direction.

FIGURE 6 shows a string stretched between two fixed points P and Q. A vibrator is
attached near end P of the string. End Q is fixed to a wall. The vibrator has a
frequency of 50 Hz and causes a transverse wave to travel along the string at a speed
of 40 m s -1 .

i) Calculate the wavelength of the transverse wave on the string.


ii) Determine the frequency of the vibration string when three antinodes can be
found.

7. Each point on the string is at its maximum displacement. Calculate the length of
string PQ.

(a) A cooper rod is 20 cm longer than an aluminum rod. Calculate the length of the copper
rod if the difference in their lengths are independent to the temperature.

(b) Two stretched cables both experience the same stress. The first cable has a radius of
3.9 10−3 m and is subject to a stretching force of 450 N. The radius of the second cable
is 5.110−3 m . Determine the stretching force acting on the second cable.

(c) A window that is 0.50 cm thick has dimensions of 95 cm x 35 cm with a temperature


difference across the glass equal to 25o C , calculate the amount of heat that will flow
through in 5.0 minutes. [k glass = 0.80 J / s m oC ]
