ACTIVITY Linear and Volume Expansion
PART A: Linear Expansion

Title: Linear Expansion in Grilling Steel

Introduction:

When we talk about expansion, we mean the process of growing larger or more
extensive. The propensity of matter to expand in length in reaction to a change in
temperature is known as thermal expansion. An increase in temperature causes an
increase in vibration, or increased vibration within the item, as well as an increase in the
object's expansion. Since I utilized grill steel in this experiment, you can determine if the
steel would expand or not.

Objectives:

 To understand what is thermal expansion

 How the grill steel expands
 And how it relates in our real-life situation

Materials:

 Grilling Steel
 Meter Tape
 Candle, And
 Lighter
Procedure

1. Prepare all the materials such as the grilling steel, Meter tape, candle, and
lighter.
2. Measure the initial length (L0) of the grilling steel using a Meter tape and record
it.
3. Secure the grilling steel and place it where it can stay and not move.
4. Place the candles under the grilling steel and Light it using a lighter.
5. Observe for 5 - 10 minutes.
6. Once the grilling steel has reached thermal equilibrium, remove it from the
heating source and quickly measure its expanded length (L) using the Meter
tape.
7. Calculate the change in length (∆L) by subtracting the initial length (Li) from the
expanded length (Le).

Data and Results:

Time before heating 20:00

Initial Length 7.6 m
Time after heating (10 mins) 20:10
Final Length 7.8 m

Guide Questions
 What is thermal expansion?
 How the grill steel expands?

Generalization

I discovered that the grilled steel responded to heat, which implies that if the
temperature rises, there will also be an increase in vibration, or higher vibration within
the object, which will result in the thing gaining more kinetic energy and expanding
further. I now have a better knowledge of some fundamental ideas about how materials
react to heat because to this experiment.

Application

Rail tracks: Depending on the weather, rail tracks might experience temperature
changes. The expansion of the tracks brought on by heat might result in buckling or
misalignment. In order to provide safe and dependable transit, linear thermal expansion
is taken into account when designing and maintaining railroad tracks.

Evaluation

I conducted an experiment to determine how grilled steel reacts to candle heat.

The experiment was successful, and I learned that the grilled steel responded to heat. It
only grew by 0.2 cm. This occurred as a result of the varied ways the metals react to
heat. My project was a success, and I gained a lot of knowledge about materials and
doing experiments. We could attempt new things in the future to improve the
experiment. Overall, this experiment gave me a better understanding of certain key
concepts regarding how materials respond to heat.

Extension Activity: Investigating Different Materials:

Choose two or more different materials such as copper, aluminum, and glass.
Measure and record their initial lengths using a ruler or measuring tape. Heat each
material separately by placing them in containers of boiling water. Measure and record
the change in length for each material after it has been heated. Compare and analyze
the extent of linear thermal expansion for each material. Discuss the possible reasons
for the differences observed.
PART B: Volume Expansion

Title: Volume Expansion in Rectangular Can

Introduction:

When we talk about expansion, we mean the process of growing larger or more
extensive. The propensity of matter to expand in volume in reaction to a change in
temperature is known as thermal expansion. An increase in temperature causes an
increase in vibration, or increased vibration within the item, as well as an increase in the
object's expansion. Since I utilized Rectangular Can in this experiment, you can
determine if the steel would expand or not.

Objectives:

 To understand what is thermal expansion

 How the Rectangular Can expands
 And how it relates in our real-life situation

Materials:

 Grilling Steel
 Rectangular Can
 Meter Tape
 Candle, And
 Lighter

Procedure:

1. Prepare all the materials such as the rectangular can, grilling steel, Meter tape,
candle, and lighter.
2. Measure the initial volume (lwh) of the rectangular can using a Meter tape and
record it.
3. Place the rectangular can on top of grilling steel and place it where it can stay
and not move.
4. Place the candles under the grilling steel and Light it using a lighter.
5. Observe for 5 - 10 minutes.
6. Once the rectangular can has reached thermal equilibrium, remove it from the
heating source and quickly measure its expanded volume (v) using the Meter
tape.
7. Calculate the final volume (Fv) by subtracting the volume (steel) and the volume
(gas).

Data and Results:

Time before heating 20:00

Initial Length 14.6 m
Initial Width 9.7 m
Initial Height 22.3 m
Time after heating (10 mins) 20:10
Final Length 14.8 m
Final Width 9.9 m
Final Height 22.5 m
Guide Questions:

 What is volume thermal expansion?

 What potential uses or practical implications can understand linear thermal
expansion have?

Application:
Industrial Processes: A variety of industrial processes, including metal casting,
injection molding, and the production of glass, call for exact temperature control.
Designing molds, maintaining dimensional precision, and avoiding flaws are all made
easier by having an understanding of the volume thermal expansion of the materials
employed in these procedures.

Extension Activity:

Real-life Demonstrations: Conduct hands-on experiments to demonstrate volume

thermal expansion. For example, take a glass bottle or a metal rod/can and heat it
gently. As the temperature increases, the expansion of the material will become
apparent.
