Q3.Why were Hitler’s Foreign Policy actions in 1935-36 successful? (6 marks)
Q3.How far was Mussolini responsible for the destruction of the authority of the League of Nations? Explain
your answer. (10 marks)

To some extent I believe that Mussolini was responsible for the destruction of the Authority of the
League of Nations, because he was an Italian dictator and had caused lots of incidents during the
20’s and 30’s such as the Corfu incident and his invasion of Abyssinia.
One reason why Mussolini was responsible for the destruction of League’s authority was because of his actions in Corfu.
Due to the death of Italian in Greece, Mussolini bombed the Greek city of Corfu in 1923,which the league condemned.
Agreement However, Mussolini went behind the League’s back to the conference of Ambassadors, who overturned the Leagues
For
Decision and ultimately Greece had to pay reparation to Italy, despite being bombard. This clearly showed that the
League did not hold any power or authority as Mussolini was easily able to overturn their decision and directly go against
the league, making it look weak in the international sphere.

However, a big part why the League didn’t have authority was due to its structure. For the league to

As it was obvious it was a tool for more powerful countries to use for themselves. Additionally, the League
did not have an army of its own and thus was releasing on Britian’s and France’s army to fight if
conflict arose, further weaking its authority.
Another reason why the League’s authority was undermined was the membership of the League, this

The part of the League, was Italy’s biggest trading partner, and they continued to trade, meaning that the
Economic sanctions were essentially useless, all of this together further undermined the authority of
League as they weren't allowed to take military action, because of its own members, and the sanction that
they did impose were useless because of the insufficient membership.

In conclusion, to great extent I believe that the structure and membership of the League was its biggest
