Information Sheet 1.1-2
SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:
a.) Define sentence
b.) Construct a sentence using the four types of sentence structure.

Content:
Sentence is a collection of words assembled in such order and present a complete
thought or idea. Sentence begins with capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.

A sentence contains a subject and a predicate. The subject is the noun (person,
place or thing) doing or something. The predicate contains the verb, which identifies
what the subject is doing.

Four types of Sentence Structure

1. Simple Sentence- contains a single subject and a single predicate.
Example: the man rode the bicycle.
The man is the subject, and road the bicycle is the predicate.
Sentences contain clauses. A clauses contains a subject and a predicate. An
independent clause expresses a complete thought. A simple sentence is an independent
clause.

2. Compound Sentence- is made up of two or more independent clauses

combined using a coordinating conjunction such as and , or, but.

Communication 29
`
Example: the man rode the bicycle, but he went on a wrong way.

In this example, “the man rode the bicycle “and “he went the wrong way” are
independent clauses.

3. Complex Sentence- contains more than one subject and more than one verb.
It is made up of more than one clause: an independent clause and dependent
clause. a dependent or subordinate clause contains a subject and a predicate
but does not express a complete thought. A dependent clause often begins with
subordinating conjunction that make the clause unable to stand alone.
Example: the man went the wrong way because he was lost.

“The man went the wrong way” is an independent clauses; “because he was lost” is
a dependent clause.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence- is made from two independent clauses and

one or more dependent clause.
Example: although he likes to ride the bicycle, the man has not had the time to ride
lately, and he has not found anyone to ride with.

“although he likes to ride the bicycle” is the dependent clause. “The man has not had
time to ride lately” and “he has not found anyone to ride with” are the independent
clauses.

Content:
Effective communication is a process of exchanging ideas, thoughts, knowledge
and information such that the purpose or intention is fulfilled in the best possible

way best understood by the receiver.

We can say that it generally involves the sender and the receiver.
Sender- the person who initiates the process of communication by sending a message.
Receiver- the one to whom the message is to be delivered.

Characteristic of Effective Communication

1. Clear Message- the message which the sender wants to convey must be simple,
easy to understand and systematically framed to retain its meaningfulness.
2. Correct Message- the information communicated must not be vague or false in
any sense; it must be free from errors and grammatically mistakes.
3. Complete Message- communication is the base for decision making. If the
information is complete, it may lead to the wrong decisions.
4. Precise Message- the message sent must be short and concise to facilitate
straightforward interpretation and take the desired steps.

physical settings must be planned, keeping in mind the attitude, language,
knowledge, education level and position of the receiver.
