SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS QUARTER: 1

GRADE LEVEL: 10 LESSON 2: POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS

LEARNING PLAN
EXPLORE
In this chapter, we expand our equation solving processes and graphing
techniques to include more general polynomial equations and functions. Then,
our knowledge of polynomial functions allow us to know more rational functions.
The function concept serves as a unifying thread throughout the chapter.

In this lesson, you will learn how to divide polynomials using long division
and synthetic division. You also assessed your understanding in division of
polynomials as illustrated in some real- life problems. You were also given varied
activities to further deepen and transfer your understanding of the different
lessons to new situations. You will use that knowledge especially in this time of
crisis the whole world is facing right now. You will also learn how to proves the
remainder theorem, factor theorem and the rational root theorem.

LEARNING FIRM-UP (ACQUISITION)

COMPETENCY
LC 1: illustrates Activity 1: Play and Learn
polynomial equations Steps:
1. Choose any number.
2. Multiply your number by a constant 3.
3. Add the sum of your number and 8 to the number you got when you
multiplied.
4. Divide by the sum of your number and 2.
Learning Targets 5. The answer is always 4.
I can illustrate
polynomial equations Let’s try this!

1. Choose 5 Let x=5

2. Multiply 5 by 3 = 5x3=15 x(3) =3x

3. Add (5+8) + 15 =28 (X+8)+3x = 4x+8

4. Divide 28 by (5+2) =7 4x+8 the value

of x+2 X = 4

Did you enjoy the activity? Try another one if you have time, you just follow the
steps above. The expression (4x + 8) and (x + 2) at the right of the table describes
a polynomial.

LEARNING DEEPEN (MAKE MEANING)

COMPETENCY
LC 1 : proves the Activity 2: Let’s Explore! Proving!
Remainder Theorem,
Factor Theorem and the 1. For each of the following, divide the polynomial P(x) by
Rational Root Theorem the divisor (x-r). Then calculate for P(r).
a. P(x) = 4x3 + x2 + 3x + 6 b. P(x) = 2x4 + 3x3 – x2 + 2x
+10
x+2 x+1
Learning Targets:
I can prove the 2. Organize your work in No. 1 completing the table below.
Remainder Theorem,
Factor Theorem and the Dividend Divisor Remainder P(r)
Rational Root P(x) x-r r
Theorem a
b

3. What did you observe about the Remainder and P(r)?

In Activity 2, you observed that dividing P(x) by x – r results in a remainder that

is equal to P(x). This activity shows the proof of the Remainder Theorem.

Activity 3: Let’s try this!

1. Determine whether x-5 is a factor of
a. 3x3 – 12x2 – 5x – 50
b. 3x3 – 4x2 + 3x - 160
c. x3 – 4x2 – 25
2. Find k so that x-2 is a factor of 3x3 + 10x2 – 27k – 1
3. Find k so that mx+4 is a factor of x2 – kx + 8

division
Directions: Evaluate the polynomial at the given values of x. Next, determine
the letter that matches your answer. When you are done, you will be able to
decode the message. Have Fun!

A. P(x) = x3 + 8x2 + 13x – 10

x -3 -2 0
P(x)
message

B. P(x) = x4 – 4x3 – 7x2 + 22x + 18

x -3 -2 0
P(x)
message

R = 18 R = -12
E = -16 A = -10
Y = 78 P = -4

1. How did you find the value of P(x) given the value of x?

2. What message did you obtain?
