There are numerous cozy cafes in Sg Long where students can unwind during breaks or workers
can enjoy their lunch. These establishments, such as Taiwan Tea House, MiXue, Blackboard
Café and Tealive, have been part of the local scene for at least six months. As a result, they
have established a consistent customer base, with each cafe offering distinctive features to
appeal to their patrons.
SWOT Analysis
A SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool utilized by organizations to address challenges
and identify areas for improvement. The acronym "SWOT" represents Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities, and Threats. Prior to initiating any business endeavours, it is advisable for
Mercury Café to conduct a SWOT analysis. As outlined by Schooley (n.d.), the primary goal
of this analysis is to ensure a comprehensive understanding of all relevant factors influencing
a business decision. This analysis is valuable when a company is contemplating various actions,
such as exploring new initiatives, revising internal policies, considering opportunities for pivot,
or adjusting plans during execution. Strengths and weaknesses pertain to internal factors,
encompassing resources and experiences like financial and physical resources. Furthermore,
external factors, whether directly or indirectly linked to opportunities or threats, play a
significant role in influencing and impacting every organization.
SWOT Explanation
Strength Mercury Café distinguishes itself by offering reasonably priced menu
options that cater to the broader public, making it an attractive choice for a
diverse customer base. The affordability factor contributes to the café's
accessibility and appeal to a wide range of individuals. Furthermore, the café
takes pride in its culinary offerings, benefitting from the expertise of an
experienced chef capable of preparing a variety of cuisines. This culinary
proficiency not only enhances the overall dining experience but also sets

crafted dishes. The strategic advantage of Mercury Café extends to its
location, strategically positioned near UTAR staff and students. This

Weaknesses Being a recent addition to the town, Mercury Café finds itself in a unique
position as it embarks on its journey without the advantage of an existing
pool of loyal customers. This lack of an established customer base presents
both challenges and opportunities for the café to carve its niche in the local
market. Compounding the situation, the customer service team is currently
experiencing a deficiency in training. Acknowledging the importance of
exceptional service in the hospitality industry, Mercury Café recognizes the
need to invest in training initiatives to enhance the overall customer
experience. This represents an ongoing effort to build rapport with patrons
and foster a positive reputation within the community. Adding to the
complexities, there is a financial constraint concerning the budget for the
café's renovation. In response to this limitation, Mercury Café has chosen to
adopt a minimalist style. This strategic decision not only aligns with current
design trends but also serves as a practical solution to operate within
budgetary constraints.
Opportunities The collaborative venture with UTAR marks an exciting opportunity for
Mercury Café, as it involves the promotion of a specially designed and
budget-friendly set meal catering specifically to the student demographic.
This collaboration aligns with the cafe's strategic approach to not only attract
students but also to provide them with an economical and appealing dining
option. In a further show of support, UTAR has given Mercury Café the
green light to set up a promotional booth directly on the campus grounds.
This presents a valuable avenue for the café to engage directly with the
university community, generating anticipation and awareness about the
upcoming establishment. The promotional booth serves as a platform to
showcase the unique offerings of Mercury Café, creating a buzz among
potential customers and fostering a sense of excitement. Moreover, the
collaborative effort extends to the realm of operational costs. A mutually
agreeable rental arrangement has been negotiated, demonstrating a
commitment to cost-effectiveness. This not only helps Mercury Café
manage its budget efficiently but also plays a crucial role in lowering fixed
costs associated with establishing a presence on the UTAR campus.

For the renovation, we chose RC Renovation Contractor as they provide the best
design that fits our needs and budget, except for the tables and chairs, which we bought from
IKEA Malaysia.
For the appliances, we bought most electrical appliances from Harvey Norman. They
provide good-quality and reliable electrical appliances, even with excellent after-sales
services. They provide a 5-year warranty on their electrical appliances with a 14-day free
return.
For the kitchen utensils, we chose Maju Emas Kitchenware Sdn Bhd, the leading
kitchenware supplier in Malaysia. It is a 30-year-old company that specializes in kitchenware
for the Malaysian environment.
We bought all our coffee beans from Zus Coffee for the coffee and ingredients. They
offer premium, freshly roasted beans at a 30% discount.
For the ingredients and consumables, we bought them from Lotus Kajang, as it is the
nearest hypermarket that provides quality local goods at reasonable prices.
For software, we bought it from Shopee because Shopee has a sale that makes the
software 10% cheaper. The price includes three bug fixes. We chose Unifi to provide the Wi-
Fi service as Unifi has the most stable WIFI connection in Malaysia.
Last, the decoration is provided by Pexcel Malaysia. They print quality posters and
paintings that come with framing services.
Upon the arrival of these materials at our café, they will be strategically positioned in
front of the establishment. It is important to note that this placement may temporarily obstruct
the store's walkway. To address potential safety concerns for the public, precautionary measures
will be implemented. Specifically, caution signs will be strategically placed in the surrounding
area to alert pedestrians to exercise caution due to the presence of construction materials.
To further ensure public safety and maintain an organized process, the materials will be
meticulously arranged within a designated signboard area. This not only minimizes the impact
on the store's walkway but also enhances the overall safety and efficiency of the renovation
logistics. The careful coordination between YH Construction and the implementation of safety
measures underscores our commitment to a smooth and secure renovation process for both our
team and the public.
vegetables, salt, and various seasoning ingredients. Meanwhile, Jinx Meat and Seafood
supplies contribute the fresh meat and seafood for the café.
Managing the logistics for ShunXiang Food Distribution is the esteemed Kokubu Food
Logistics Malaysia Sdn Bhd. With a rich history dating back to 1712, Kokubu boasts over 300
years of experience in food and beverage distribution, particularly in the Japanese market, as
highlighted by Kokubu (n.d.). This partnership ensures a reliable and well-established supply
chain for Mercury Café's raw food requirements.
Conversely, Jinx Meat and Seafood supplies operate with their own dedicated logistic
team, ensuring a continuous and round-the-clock operation to meet delivery schedules
promptly. This commitment to a 24/7 logistical approach by Jinx Meat and Seafood reflects
their dedication to timely and dependable deliveries of fresh meat and seafood for Mercury
Café. These meticulous arrangements in logistics underscore our commitment to maintaining
a seamless and high-quality supply chain for our culinary operations.
In the grand scheme of things, the logistical expenses for the construction phase are
estimated to be approximately RM2000. This amount encompasses various costs associated
with the transportation and handling of construction materials throughout the renovation
process. Additionally, on a weekly basis, the transportation fees for the regular procurement of
raw food materials are expected to amount to approximately RM200. These costs reflect our
commitment to ensuring the smooth flow of both construction and culinary operations,
underscoring our dedication to quality and efficiency in all aspects of Mercury Café.
According to Harvard Business School Professor Robert Simons, who teaches the online course
Strategy Execution, "competing successfully in any industry involves some level of risk" (Kate
Gibson, 2023). However, companies with impressive performance and prominent levels of
pressure are particularly susceptible. It is imperative for managers to understand the genesis,
persistence, and mitigation of these hazards.
One technique for graphically displaying the outcomes of risk and effect assessments is a risk-
impact probability chart. It has multiple criteria and is a crucial visual tool for risk management.
It is necessary to first grasp the concepts of risk impact and risk likelihood in order to fully
comprehend how this tool functions.
Determining the likelihood that a risk will materialize is known as risk probability. Typically,
this likelihood is derived from past data. Does the issue happen at a particular frequency? A
risk is typically given a score, such as 3, 2, or 1, when calculating its probability. According to
Toolshero (2019), there is a high danger, two are medium risks, and one is insignificant risk.
Impact is a danger since it always has an adverse effect. In terms of cost and effect on human
health, life, or other important aspects, the influence varies, though. This is frequently rated as
high, medium, or low.
The dangers that are depicted in the risk effect and probability chart may elicit different
responses. Sometimes taking a chance is just accepted and is not as horrible as it sounds. When
a corporation faces a risk that could shut down its entire production line, for example, prompt
action is necessary to minimize the harm. There are four strategies to approach risks (Toolshero,
2019).
To sum up, risk management offers a structured framework to effectively traverse risks, acting
as a proactive roadmap for initiatives. Projects can raise the likelihood of overall success, make
well-informed decisions, and spend resources wisely by methodically addressing risks. Taking
a proactive and strategic approach to risk management can help you achieve positive results in
any project you work on, whether it is a commercial initiative or something entirely different.
Management - Mitigate
Table 8.3. Intense competition from existing cafes or food establishments near the
university
Management - Mitigate
Make the café stand out from the competition by providing an exclusive value proposition,
like a varied menu, housemade ambiance, or specialized coffee blends. To identify market
gaps that the café can address, do a competitive analysis. Remain flexible by periodically
revising the menu in response to consumer input and new developments in the market. Take
part in neighborhood alliances or joint ventures to increase the cafe's exposure and allure.
Table 8.4. Difficulty in recruiting and retaining skilled staff, leading to service quality
issues
Management - Mitigate
Establish a strict hiring procedure that includes in-depth interviews and skill evaluations. To
draw the top people, provide benefits and competitive pay. Continually offer opportunities
for professional development and training. Create a welcoming and upbeat work
environment to increase employee retention and happiness. Cross-train employees to
guarantee coverage and flexibility during busy periods.
Table 8.5. Failure to comply with health and safety standards, licensing requirements,
and other regulations.
Management - Avoid
To avoid the risk of non-compliance with health and safety standards, licensing

9.1 Recommendations
In practice, ensuring a project is completed on time and within budget is insufficient; aligning
the product with stakeholders' expectations is crucial. Achieving excellence in a project
involves direct contributions to building quality, leading to reduced operational costs and
increased satisfaction among stakeholders. Successful project delivery necessitates the
implementation of management systems to control changes in key factors such as scope,
schedule, budget, resources, and risk, optimizing quality. Early investment in planning,
programming, and design can prevent unnecessary costs and project delays. When faced with
scope creep, three options exist: adding time, which delays the project; adding cost, involving
hiring more people; or cutting quality, sacrificing non-essential requirements for new ones. A
proficient project manager consistently makes decisions that effectively balance time, quality,
and resources.
