Once you finish evaluating the video, share back with your classmates:
• What did you observe? What might you do differently? How did you rate this presentation?
• Clarify expectations.
• Use “we” rather than “I” when discussing the session. For example, say, “Let’s go over the objectives,”
rather than, “I’ll review the objectives for you.”
• Tell a story.
• Share the value of this training with participants and how it relates to them.
Before we get started, I’d like to share a bit more about why I’m so passionate
about helping small businesses grow.
Refer back to your assigned teach-back deck, and take a few moments to understand
the overall topic of the presentation. Then take a few minutes to write an introduction
for your presentation. You can use the template from the previous page as a foundation.
Remember, your audience will be small business owners hoping to use Facebook and
Instagram for their business. It’s important that you share a time you personally have
connected with a business on Facebook or Instagram so you can showcase the potential
of using these tools for their business.
01. Take 5 minutes to write your introduction based on your teach-back deck.
02. Join your assigned breakout room. You will automatically be added by your facilitator.
03. In your breakout rooms, share your introductions with each other, and provide constructive

Tips
• Instead of timing each slide, break your presentation into sections and assign a timeframe for
each section instead.

you will dedicate to each section of your presentation. Remember, you will have a total of
10 minutes for your final presentation.

• Think positively. Send your brain positive messages. Tell yourself that this is going to be the best training
these people have ever attended!
• Accept nervousness. Acknowledge that you will be somewhat nervous. Remind yourself that being nervous
is completely normal and natural.
• Imagine a conversation. Think of your training session as an extended conversation with a good friend.
• Incorporate humor. Try appropriate humor early to relax yourself and your participants.
• Involve participants early. Get your participants involved in the training early by asking them questions.
Once your participants are involved, you will feel more like you’re conducting a two-way conversation than a
training session.

During your training sessions, ask participants engaging and leading questions that lead to learning and
discussion. Tips on asking and answering questions:
• Consider whether it should be an open- or closed-ended question. Know why you are asking questions: to
create discussion, correct a response, review information, or as a hypothetical comment.
• If asking a direct question, say the participant’s name first, then ask the question.
2 Use breakout rooms to let learners interact with peers and ask questions.
3 Schedule breaks so participants have a chance to grab a drink or use the restroom.
4 Separate longer topics into short chunks and engage participants with questions or
breakout rooms.
5 Ask participants to share how they’re feeling before moving on to the next topic.

Learning objectives are written to specify the desired outcome (knowledge or skill)
once the training has been completed. Simply put, learning objectives help the learner
understand why and how this content is important and valuable to them. As a trainer, it’s
important for you to keep that in mind as you lead your participants.

they are engaged and can see and hear you.

• Heckling?
• Argumentative behavior?
• A domineering personality?
• Uncooperative participants?
When you facilitate, you may encounter potential disruptions—in person or in a virtual
classroom. If you find a participant’s behavior disruptive to the group, try these tactics to
address them:
• Recognize the individual’s point and then either gain the viewpoints of others or take the
discussion offline.
Here are some ways you can encourage varying opinions while avoiding
destructive conflict:
• Openly praise group members who are willing to suggest new and different approaches.
• If needed, analyze why conflicts keep occurring—usually participants aren’t fighting about what
they say they are fighting about.
• Model the kind of behavior that shows a comfort level with conflict.
While you may do everything to create a healthy and encouraging learning environment,
there will be times when you need to step in and intervene. Here are some ways you can
intervene with your participants:
• Suggest a break.
• Summarize any problem(s) and alternatives that the group generated. Summarizing helps the
group refocus and keep moving.
• Debrief the group to examine what is happening. Debriefing requires all group members to reflect
on how the session is going.
P I VOT O N YO U R F E E T
• Given the purpose and the participants, which is the optimal route?
Now that you are familiar with potential challenging behaviors that may arise as you are
presenting, you can now practice how you might handle these potential scenarios!
01. Join your assigned breakout room. You will be automatically added by your facilitator.
02. Have one of your groupmates pull up the activity associated with your deck.
03. Take 15 minutes to discuss this challenging behavior, and how you might manage it. Think about
other creative ways you can manage troublesome behavior in the future.
In your virtual classroom, you notice a few participants that keep receiving loud pings
during your training session. How would you manage this behavior?
In your virtual classroom, you notice that you have a group of uncooperative
participants that are not actively participating in your group activities. How would you
