4.5-11 Heat-Transfer Area and Use of Log Mean Temperature Difference.

A reaction mixture having a

cpm = 2.85 KJ/kg K is flowing at a rate of 7260 kg/h and is to be cooled from 377.6K to 344.3 K.
Cooling water at 288.8 K is available and the flow rate is 4536 kg/h. The overall Uo is 653 W/m^2 K.
a. For counterflow, calculate the outlet water temperature and the area Ao of the exchanger.
b. Repeat for concurrent flow.
(4.5-3)
Given:
Cpm = 2.85 kj/kg k
Cpm(H2O)=4. 181
- (A, 2-5)

U0 = 653 W/m2 k
(ou) Counter current flow

SOLUTION:
q=mcpm (T1-T2) = 7260 (2.85) (371.6-344.3) = 689.010 kj/k

q=1 = mccpm (T1-T2)=4536(4.181)(T1–288.8) = 689,010

T1 = 325.2K

Eq. (4.5-17)
ΔT2= 344.3 – 288.8 = 55.5 K
ΔT1= 377.6 – 325.2 = 52.4 K

Eq. (4.5-16)

A0 = 5.43 m2

Current flow
ΔT1= 377.6 – 288.8 = 88.8 K
ΔT2= 344.3 – 325.2 = 19.1 K

Q = 653(A0)(45.35) =

A0 = 6.46 m2
4.5-5 Cooling Oil and Overall Oil. Oil flowing at rate of 7258 kg/h with a cpm= 2.01 KJ/kg K is cooled
from 394.3 K to 338.9 K in a counterflow heat exchanger by water entering at 294.3 K and leaving at
305.4 K. Calculate the flow rate of the water and the overall Ui if the Ai is 5.11 m^2.

Given:
Cpm(H2O) = 4.183 kJ/kg k
m = kg water 1h
Cpm (oil) = 2.01 kJ/kg k
m = 7258 kgoil / h
Ai = 5.11 m2

Eq. (4.5-2)
q = mcpm (T1– T2)
= 7258(2.01)(394.3–338.9)
= 8.082 x 105 kJ/h
q = mcpm(T1–T2)
8.082x105= m(4.183)(305.4 – 294.3)
m = 17420 kg H2O/h

Eq. (4.5-27)

ΔT1= 394.3 – 305.4 = 88.9 K

ΔT2= 338.9 – 294.3 = 44.6 K

Eq. (4.5-27)
q = UI AI ΔTLM
(8.082 x 10^5 (10〖^3〗))/3600 J/a = Ui (5.11)(64.22)
Ui = 686 W/m2 K
