Reported Commands

1. The introductory verb (say to, said to, etc) changes to the verbs of command or request such as
tell, order, command, ask, etc.
Example:*He said,” Come in, Mike”
He told Mike to come in.
*She said,” Don’t close the door.”
She asked me not to close the door.

2. The verbs urge, beg, remind, warn, advise, recommend and invite are often used in indirect
commands and requests.
Example: *He said,” Please give me another chance.”
He begged me to give him another chance.
*She said,” Don’t come late to my class again.”
She warned me not to come late to her class again.

3. Command and request introduced by “will you/would you/could you” are expressed in an
indirect speech by ask or tell.
Example: *Suzie said,” Would you come to my party?
Suzie asked me to come to her party.
*John said,” Could you hold this paper for a minute?”
John told me to hold the paper for a minute.

General note:

● When the statement has adverbial clause of time (which is in the past form), the tense of the
clause is not changed.
Example: He said,” I was watering the plants when the postman came.”
He said that he had been watering the plants when the postman came.
● “this” in time expression is changed to “that”.
Example: He said,” The package is coming this week.”
He said that the package was coming that week.
● “this/that/these/those” as adjectives are changed into “the”.
Example: He said,” I bought this dress/these dresses for my wife.”
He said that he had bought the dress/dresses for his wife.
● “this/these” as pronouns are changed into “it/they/them”.
Example: The manager said,” We will discuss this tomorrow.”
The manager said that they would discuss it the next day.
● “here” is changed into “there” when it is clear what place is meant.
Example: At Kuta beach he said,” I’ll be here again next year.”
At Kuta beach he said that he’d be there again the following year.

I. Change the following direct commands into the indirect form!

1. The lady said to the driver,” Slow down, please!”


The lady urged the driver to slow down.
2. Mother said,” Go home before 9 o’clock.”
Mother reminded me to go home before 9 o’clock.
3. The Captain said to the late soldiers,” Do 50 push-ups now!”
The Captain commanded the late soldiers to do 50 push-ups.
4. He said,” Could you pass me the salt please?
He asked me to pass him the salt.
5. Nora said,” Don’t you ever borrow my T-shirt again!”
Nora warned me not to borrow her T-shirt again.

II. Change the following indirect commands into the direct form!

1. Mira urged her husband to take her to Lombok for holiday.


Mira said to her husband, “Please take me to Lombok for holiday.”
2. Don ordered his team not to waste time during basketball training.
Don said to his team, “Don’t waste time during basketball training.”
3. The teacher asked to students to write a 250-words essay about their dream job.
The teacher said to the students, “Write a 250-words essay about your dream job.”
4. Mike begged his mother to give him more money to buy a new jersey.
Mike said to his mother, “Please give me more money to buy a new jersey.”
5. The doctor advised the lady not to forget to take her medicine regularly.
The doctor said to the lady, “Don’t forget to take your medicine regularly.”
