Reported Questions

1. In reporting questions in indirect speech, the sentences are introduced by verbs such as asked, inquired, etc.
For example:
❖ He said to me,” What time is it?”
He asked me what time it was.
❖ The teacher asked the students,” When did you submit your homework?”
The teacher inquired the students when they had submitted their homework.

2. When the questions are not introduced by an interrogative word (WH-question words), the reporting verb is
followed by whether or if.

For example:
❖ He said,” Do you speak Mandarin?”
He asked me whether/if I spoke mandarin.
❖ She said to James,” Will you accompany me to the market?”
She asked James whether/if he would accompany her to the market.

3. Questions beginning with shall I/shall we, can be done as follows:

● Offering
Example: He offered,” Shall I bring you some tea?’
He offered to bring some tea.
● Suggestion
Example: He suggested,” Shall we meet again someday?”
He suggested meeting again someday.
● Speculation/request for future information
Example: He said,” Shall I call her this afternoon?”
He said if he should call her this afternoon.

I. Change the following direct questions into the indirect form!

1. My father asked,” Who is that woman?”

My father asked me who that woman was.
2. He asked,” Where can I buy some cigarettes?”
He asked me where he could buy some cigarettes.
3. The lady asked,” Is there a coffee shop around here?’
The lady asked if there was a coffee shop around there.
4. The teacher asked the students,” Do you have any tests beside English next week?”
The teacher asked the students if they had any tests beside English the following week.
5. She said,” How long have you stayed in Jakarta?”
She asked how long have you stayed in Jakarta.
6. Tom said to Jane,” Will you marry me and be my wife?”
Tom asked Jane if she would marry him and be his wife.
7. Cathy asked,” Shall we go now?”
Cathy asked if we should go now.
8. Mom asked Tim,” Why did you apply for the job?”
Mom asked Tim why he applied for the job.
9. Joe said,” Could you lend me some money?”
Joe ask if I could lend him some money.
10. Mimi asked,” Are you happy to be back to Indonesia?”
Mimi asked if I'm happy to be back to Indonesia.

II. Change the following indirect questions into the direct form!

1. Mary asked me if my Mom had received the dress she had ordered from her.
Mary asked, “Has your mom received the dress she had ordered from me?”
2. He asked me how long it took to go to the airport from my house.
He akme, "How long does it take to go to the airport from your house?"
 3. Steve asked what I did on my spare time.
Steve asked, "What do you do in your spare time?"
4. Nana asked Joe whether he knew where the Fatahillah Museum was.
Nana asked Joe, “Do you know where the Fatahillah Museum is?”
5. The policeman inquired the lost boy where he lived.
The policeman asked the boy, “Where do you live?”

C. Reported Commands

1. The introductory verb (say to, said to, etc) changes to the verbs of command or request such as tell,
order, command, ask, etc.
Example:*He said,” Come in, Mike”
He told Mike to come in.
*She said,” Don’t close the door.”
She asked me not to close the door.

2. The verbs urge, beg, remind, warn, advise, recommend and invite are often used in indirect command
and request.
Example: *He said,” Please give me another chance.”
He begged me to give him another chance.
*She said,” Don’t come late to my class again.”
She warned me not to come late to her class again.

3. Command and request introduced by “will you/would you/could you” are expressed in indirect speech
by ask or tell.
Example: *Suzie said,” Would you come to my party?
Suzie asked me to come to her party.
*John said,” Could you hold this paper for a minute?”
John told me to hold the paper for a minute.

General note:

● When the statement has adverbial clause of time (which is in the past form), the tense of the clause is
not changed.
Example: He said,” I was watering the plants when the postman came.”
He said that he had been watering the plants when the postman came.
● “this” in time expression is changed to “that”.
Example: He said,” The package is coming this week.”
He said that the package was coming that week.
● “this/that/these/those” as adjectives are changed into “the”.
Example: He said,” I bought this dress/these dresses for my wife.”
He said that he had bought the dress/dresses for his wife.
● “this/these” as pronouns are changed into “it/they/them”.
Example: The manager said,” We will discuss this tomorrow.”
The manager said that they would discuss it the next day.
● “here” is changed into “there” when it is clear what place is meant.
Example: At Kuta beach he said,” I’ll be here again next year.”
At Kuta beach he said that he’d be there again the following year.

I. Change the following direct commands into the indirect form!

1. The lady said to the driver,” Slow down, please!”

The lady told the driver to slow down.
2. Mother said,” Go home before 9 o’clock.”
Mother told me to go home before 9 o'clock
3. The Captain said to the late soldiers,” Do 50 push-ups now!”
The Captain told the late soldiers to do 50 push-ups.
4. He said,” Could you pass me the salt please?
He asked me to pass the salt.
5. Nora said,” Don’t you ever borrow my T-shirt again!”
Nora warned me not to ever borrow her T-shirt again.

II. Change the following indirect commands into the direct form!

1. Mira urged her husband to take her to Lombok for holiday.

Mira said to her husband, "Take me to Lombok for holiday!"
2. Don ordered his team not to waste time during basketball training.
Don said to his team, "Don't waste your time during basketball training!"
3. The teacher asked to students to write a 250-words essay about their dream job.
The teacher said to the students, “Could you write a 250-word essay about your dream job?”
4. Mike begged his mother to give him more money to buy a new jersey.
Mike said to his mother, "Please give me more money to buy a new jersey."
5. The doctor advised the lady not to forget to take her medicine regularly.
The doctor said to the lady, “Don't forget to take your medicine regularly!”
