I recently discovered a #𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸 that I’m putting into

practice as a live experiment.

The process is simple:

For every project throughout the day, you budget your time into short
increments and take breaks periodically.

You work for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break.

Each 25-minute work period is called a “pomodoro,” named after the

Italian word for tomato. After four “pomodoro” work sessions have
passed (100 minutes of work time with 15 minutes of short breaks), you
then take a longer break of 15-30 minutes.

Typically, 4-6 “Pomodoros “ are considered enough to deliver optimal

output for an entire day.

The #𝗣𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗿𝗼 Technique is a simple time management system that

encourages people to work 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 the time they have—rather than
𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 it.

The idea behind the technique is that the timer instils a sense of

urgency. Rather than feeling like you have endless time in the workday
to get things done and then ultimately squander those precious work
hours on distractions, you know you only have 25 minutes to make as
much progress on a task as possible. The 5 min break after intense
“exam like” focus refreshes and re-energises you.

Many of you will relate to the feeling of intense focus and the value of
time when writing a competitive exam such as the GRE, GMAT, JEE or
CAT.

This is also in line with the concept of “time” being material “energy”
or "money.” When you (quite literally) put a timer and see that time
fizzling away, you will NOT check your phone to see the latest
notification or WhatsApp message. :-)

Now the Pomodoro technique is contrary to how I’m used to working –

I #BingeWork and #BingeBreak. I can go on 10-12 hours straight and
will achieve the most going deep and focussing exclusively for several
hours and days with minimal breaks. And then I’d like to reserve a day
or two when I do absolutely nothing! But I decided to give this method
a try after reading about it and finding that many studies speak to its
efficacy.

Have any of you tried this technique? Does it work? What are YOUR
tips for being super productive and managing your time so you use

every minute and not while it away (albeit sometimes this is great to

do!)?

Another time-management & productivity hack that works for me –

while working on important documents or presentations, SWITCH
OFF and HIDE your phone and physically remove any other
distractions that might come in your way.

(P.S. To complete this writeup, I did three Pomodoros interspersed with

a 5 min break. I could have dragged it to 2 hours without the
#PomodoroTechnique – so my early feedback is that it seems to be
working :-) )
