Exercise 7 / week 8

1. Determine the minimum applied force P required to move the wedge A to the
right. The spring is compressed a distance of 175 mm. Neglect the weight of A
and B as well as the friction at the rollers. The coefficient of static friction for all
contacting surfaces is 𝜇𝑠 = 0.35.

2. If couple forces of F = 35 N are applied to the handle of the machinist’s vise,

determine the compressive force developed in the block. Neglect friction at the
bearing A and guide B. The single square-threaded screw has a mean radius of
6 mm and a lead 8 mm, and the coefficient of static friction is 𝜇𝑠 = 0.27.

3. A farmer has caught a cow that had escaped from his cowshed. The cow is very strong
and hence is capable of exerting a force of 1200 N to the rope. Unfortunately the poor
farmer only has a mass of 90 kg and the ground is slippery (𝜇𝑠 = 0.2), so it’s more like
the cow caught him. The farmer spots a tree and decides to twist the rope around it (he
doesn’t have time to do knots) in order to prevent the cow from running away. If the
coefficient of friction between the rope and the tree is 0.15, how many times should the
farmer twist the rope around the tree so that the cow won’t run away?

4. Blocks A and B have a mass of 7 kg and 10 kg, respectively. Using the

coefficients of static friction indicated, determine the largest vertical force P
which can be applied to the cord without causing motion.

5. A conveyor belt is used to transfer granular material and the frictional

resistance on the top of the belt is F = 500 N. Determine the smallest
stretch of the spring attached to the moveable axle of the idle pulley B
so that the belt does not slip at the drive pulley A when the torque M is
applied. What is the minimum torque M that is required to keep the
belt moving? The coefficient of static friction between the belt and the
wheel at A is 𝜇𝑠 = 0.2.
