PORTFOLIO 1 (COUNTING TECHNIQUES, PERMUTATIONS,

AND COMBINATIONS)
Compile all your solutions as a portfolio that showcase your best in math.

I. FUNDAMENTAL COUNTING TECHNIQUES

Direction: Using the tree diagram and systematic listing methods of counting,
solve the following problems.

1. A restaurant offers lunch with two kinds of rice preparations, plain rice, and
fried rice. Then there is a choice of pork, beef, and chicken plus a salad of

black) in her closet reserved for such occasion. Assuming that any skirt can
be paired with any blouse, in how many ways can Anna select her outfit?
Make a list of the different outfits.

3. Supposed you secured your bike using a combination lock. Later, you
realized that you forgot the 5-digit code. You only remembered that the
code contains the digits 1,3,4,7, and 9. How many possible codes are there?
List all the possible codes out of the given digits.

II. PERMUTATIONS
Direction: Solve the following problems using the concept of permutations.
Show your complete solutions.

1. Ana, Christine, Nora and Teody posed for a photograph. In how many ways
can they be arranged?

2. In a horse race, how many different finishes among the first 3 places are
possible for a 10-horse race? Exclude ties.
3. From a standard deck of cards, how many 3-card hands are possible?

4. How many ways can 5 Geometry, 4 Statistics and 3 Algebra books be

arranged on a shelf if they are arranged a.) in any order, b.) according to
subject, and c.) in the order, Geometry, Statistics, Algebra?

5. How many 6-digit numbers can be made using the digits from 944,394?

6. Find the number of permutations of the letters of the word MATHEMATICS?

7. How many different ways can 4 keys be arranged on a key-ring that has no
clasp?

8. How many 4-digit numbers can be formed from the digits 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9
if a.) no repetition is allowed, and b.) repetition is allowed?

9. Five couples want to have their pictures taken. In how many ways can they
arrange themselves in a row if a.) couples must stay together, and b.) they
may stand anywhere?

10. There are 12 people in a dinner gathering. In how many ways can the host

any of the chairs, b.) 3 people insist on sitting beside each other, and c.) 2
people refuse to sit beside each other?

III. COMBINATIONS
Direction: Solve the following problems completely using the concept of
combinations. Show your correct solutions.

1. If there are 12 teams in a basketball tournament and each team must play
every other team in the eliminations, how many elimination games will there
be?

2. If there are 7 distinct points on a plane with no three of which are collinear,
how many different polygons can be possibly formed?
3. In a 10-item Mathematics problem-solving test, how many ways can you
select 5 problems to solve if you are required to answer question number
10?

4. In how many ways can a committee of 5 be formed from 5 juniors and 7

seniors if the committee must have 3 seniors?

5. A box contains 5 red balls, 7 green balls, and 6 yellow balls. In how many
ways can 6 balls be chosen if there should be 2 balls of each color?

6. From 7 Biology books and 6 Chemistry books, in how many ways can one
select 2 Biology and 2 Chemistry books to buy if all the said books are equally
necessary?

7. Mrs. Rivera’s business is gown rental and sale. She decided one day that she
