The Reconquista, meaning "reconquest" in Spanish and Portuguese, was a central theme in Portugal's medieval
history. Here's a deeper dive into how it played out on the Portuguese stage:
In 711 AD, Muslim forces from North Africa swept across the Iberian Peninsula, conquering most of it within a
few years.
While much of Portugal fell under Moorish rule, unlike some other regions, a significant portion in the north
remained unconquered. This mountainous region, Asturias in northwest Spain, became a refuge for Christians
who resisted Muslim domination.
The County of Portugal and Early Expansion (10th-12th Centuries):
The Kingdom of León, a Christian kingdom in northwest Iberia, emerged as a key force against the Moors. In
the 10th century, they established the County of Portugal as a buffer zone against Muslim incursions.
D. Afonso Henriques, Count of Portugal, became a pivotal figure. He achieved significant military victories
against the Moors, most notably the capture of Lisbon in 1147.
