Commune barcanesti

Bărcănești is a commune in Prahova County, Muntenia, barcanesti


Românești and Tătărani.

Location:
The commune is located south of the city of Ploiesti and is crossed by
the notional road DN1 which comes from Bucharest and leads to
Brasov, as well as by the Bucharest-Ploiesti highway which has the
junction with DN1

Demography:
According to the 2011 census, the population of Bărcănești commune
amounts to 9,384 inhabitants, increasing compared to the previous
census in 2002, when 9,377 inhabitants were registered.

The majority of the inhabitants are Romanians (92.74%), with a


minority of Roma (3.2%). For 3.95% of the population, ethnicity is
unknown.

From a confessional point of view, the majority of the inhabitants are


Orthodox (93.34%). For 3.96% of the population, the confessional
affiliation is not known.

Politics and administration:


Bărcănești municipality is administered by a mayor and a local council
composed of 15 councilors. The mayor, Gheorghe Dima, from the
National Liberal Party, has been in office since October 2020. Starting
with the local elections in 2020, the local council has the following
composition by political parties:

History:
In 1898, the commune was in Crivina square, Prahova county consisted
only of the village of residence, with 502 inhabitants, a church founded
in 1838 by Scarlat Bărcănescu, and a school founded in 1890, operating
in a building owned by the same Scarlat Bărcănescu, with 45 students
(including 2 girls). The other villages were part of other communes in
the Crivina network. Thus, the commune of Românești consisted of the
villages of Românești and Pușcași, had 794 inhabitants, a school and a
church dating from 1792. The commune of Tătărani consisted of a single
village, with 683 inhabitants, a school and a church built in 1744. jupân
Gherghiceanu and jupâneasa Joița and renovated in 1830. On the
territory of this commune there was a pond on the Recelea and Calda
streams, a pond arranged by Cotman Vel Mihalache Cornescu, who had
also renovated the church in 1830. Ghighiu village was part of Corlătești
commune .

In 1925, the Socec Yearbook records the communes of Bărcănești and


Tătărani in the same net, while the commune of Românești had been
abolished. Bărcănești commune had 2076 inhabitants in Bărcănești and
Românești villages, and Tătărani commune - 987.

In 1938, the villages were in the same configuration, but in the Ploiești
network of the county. After the administrative reorganization in 1950,
they were assigned to the regional city of Ploiești, the residence of the
Prahova region and then of the Ploiești region. In 1968, Prahova County
was re-established and Bărcănești commune included, in it, the former
Tătărani commune, as well as Ghighiu village from another disbanded
commune, Corlătești.

Historical monuments:
In the commune of Bărcănești there are the ruins of the Brâncoveanu-
Mavrocordat mansion (18th – 19th centuries) from Tătărani;

But also the Ghighiu monastery (1817, 1856–1866), whose ensemble


includes the large church “Izvorul Tămăduirii” (1866), the small church
“Resurrection of Saint Lazarus” (1817), the cells on the south and west
sides, the bell tower and the enclosure wall (1856).

Both are classified as historical architectural monuments of national


interest
