NOTE: Length of water trough one-tenth of that of feeding trough. All the animals may feed
at the same time in a shed, but not all animals drink water at a time.

Freestall system

Terms:
• Span – The horizontal distance between the internal faces of walls or supports.
• Run- it is half of the span.
• Rise- it is the vertical height between the eave to ridge.
• Ridge – The highest part of the building is ridge where the two slopes of the roof
joints.
• Rafters – These are the pieces of timber, which extend from eaves to the ridge.
• Eaves - lower edges of the roof which is resting on the supporting wall.
• Pitch of a roof- It is the degree of slope to the side of the roof. Steep pitches are
necessary for thatched and tiled roof. The low pitch is suitable for aluminum,
asbestos and other metal sheets. It is 35º for thatched roof, 25-30º for tiled roof
and 12-18º for sheet roof.

Types of roofing patterns:


• Single span type/Lean to type: This type of roof is used in small construction which makes use of
the simplest materials.

• Gable or double span type: This type of roof is the most common type of roof system. It has two
sides that meet at top to form a ridge.

• Monitor type: This type of roof is ideal for big establishments especially in commercial farms. It is
a double span with an outlet of air at the top of the roof.

• Semi-monitor type: This type of roof is similar to the monitor type except that the outlet of air is
made on one side only.
