The Pampanga Lantern Festival
The tradition of the lantern festival in
San Fernando Pampanga
dates back to the 1800s. In those days,
the people of Bacolor, the
capital of Pampanga then, used
lanterns made of bamboo and rice
paper, and lighted with candles or gas
lamps. Every morning, nine
days before Christmas, they carried
these lanterns with them as
they paraded along the road before
proceeding to the pre-dawn
mass known as misa de gallo or
simbang gabi.

have become more complex.
