What I Need to Know

When most people are asked of the definition of health, they will most likely
relate it to the physical well-being of an individual. However, health is more than
looking healthy. Based on what you have learned in the previous modules,
health has different dimensions: physical, emotional, mental, social, moral-
spiritual, and environmental. Other than looking healthy, an individual must also
be feeling, thinking, and interacting healthily to achieve wellness.

In this module, we will give more attention on your mental and

emotional health. It will help you gain awareness on how your health is affected
with the way you think and feel. Here, you will discover that any imbalance in
your mental and emotional health may result to stress. Stress, as a response
of the body to a certain event or experience, has many sources: family, friends,
school, and community. Furthermore, you will also learn the two different kinds
of stress. In addition, you will work on activities that will let you identify the
stressful events in your life. Finally, this module will help you identify the people
who can help you in your stressful situations. https://bit.ly/3bj3Dvx

What I Know

Direction: Read the paragraph carefully and answer the questions in 2-3 sentences
only. Write your answers in your Health notebook.
Boyong who is now in Grade 7 is a consistent honor student. One day in school,
his Math teacher called his attention about his recent score in their summative test.
His teacher told him that he got a lower score than his previous exams. He was sad
about it and worried on his grade. The reason why it happened because he spent
longer time playing an online game called Mobile Legends or ML than his studies. So,
to make his scores higher again he stopped playing ML and studied longer than he
did before. As a result, he got an outstanding grade and ranked “With High Honors”
and felt so much joy and happiness.
1. The paragraph described Boyong’s thoughts and feelings towards different
situations. What do you call the dimension of health that deals with the person’s
thoughts and feelings?
2. When Boyong’s teacher announced that he got a lower score, he felt so sad
and worried. What do you call the response of one’s body from a certain
situation?
3. The story talked about Boyong’s experiences in both being happy and sad due
to some situations. His response to these sad and happy situations is called
stress. What are its two kinds?
4. The paragraph mentioned that Boyong’s sadness was due to his lower score in
the exam. What do you call the things that make a person stressed?
5. If that stressful situation will happen to you, mention a name of a person to
whom you will seek help or advice, then state your relationship with him/her.

What’s In

According to the World Health Organization’s Ottawa Charter for Health

Promotion (1986), “Health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living”.
This means that health is where we get our means to function normally in all the
things that we do. Health has six (6) dimensions which contribute to the total well-
being of a person. What are these dimensions? Copy the diagram below in your
Health notebook and complete it.

What is It

Do you think that stress is always something negative? Actually, stress can
either be negative or positive!
Stress is defined as the physiological or physical and emotional responses to
a significant or unexpected change or disruption in one’s life.
It may also refer to “what you feel when you react to pressure, either from the
outside world (school, family, friends) or from yourself i.e., wanting to fit in, wanting
to do well in school.
The word stressor refers to the things that make a person stressed. Here are
some of the following stressors:
 homework and school (especially exams)
 expectations and pressure to do well at school from parents and family
 social relationships with friends
 extracurricular commitments
 lack of time – having too much to do, feeling unprepared or overwhelmed
 lack of sleep (parents.au.reachout.com)
There are two different kinds of stress- eustress and distress. Eustress refers
to a positive and healthy response of the body from a stressor. The prefix eu of
eustress is a Greek syllable which means positive. Eustress produces good effects
to one’s well-being. For example, a person, who studied for long hours then took and
got an outstanding grade in the exam, may feel happiness and enjoyment.
On the other hand, distress refers to a negative reaction of the body towards a
given stressor. The prefix di of distress is a Greek syllable which means negative.
Distress may cause problems in health, alter the mood and emotions, and even
affect the way a person thinks. For example, when a person woke up late for work,
he or she may feel anger and disappointment. https://bit.ly/2Ni3RLq
It is also very important that we should know the people whom we can seek
help when we are in a stressful situation. The following are some who can provide
support:
 Family
 Friends
 Guidance Counselors
 Teachers
 Barangay Health Workers
