Wave motion
The types of the waves [the ability of propagate]
Points Mechanical waves Electromagnetic waves
Medium They need a medium to travel They don't need a medium

Travelling They don't travel through They travel through space

through space vacuum (space)
Speed low speed High speed 3x 108 m/s
Or 300,000 km/s
Types 1. Transverse waves They are all transverse waves.
2. Longitudinal wave
Ex.: water wave & Sound wave 1. Light waves
2.radio waves: that used in radars

1) We see lightning before hearing the thunder.

Because the light is an electromagnetic wave, which has higher speed than mechanical waves [sound]
2) We can't hear the sound of solar explosions occurring on the sun,
but we can see the light of it.
Because sound is mechanical wave which needs medium to travel through, while the light is electromagnetic wave which
can travel through vacuum.
Concepts related to wave motion:
1. The wave length
P.O.C. wave length (λ) of transverse wave length (λ) of longitudinal
waves waves
The distance between the the distance between the centers
Definition centers of two successive crests of two successive compressions or
or troughs. rarefactions

-1-
The unit of wave length is the meter (m)
Millimeter (mm) = 1 x 10-3 meter
Micrometer = 1 x 10-6 meter
Nanometer = 1 x 10-9 meter

2. Amplitude: the unit is m / cm

The maximum displacement of medium particles away from rest position.

3. Wave velocity:
D
The distance covered by the wave in 1 second. (m)

V (m/s) time (s)

Velocity =

The measuring unit of wave velocity is m/s

The velocity of sound is constant for the medium. Sound travels with different
velocities in different media.
Sound speeds in different media
In air In water In wood
Velocity of sound 340 m/s 1500 m/s 1850 m/s

Velocity of sound in air < in water < in wood

4. Frequency
no.
The no. of complete waves in a second.
Of waves
F (Hz) time (s)

The law of wave propagation

Wave velocity = Frequency x wavelength V
V (m/s) = F (Hz) x λ (m) F λ

A solved exercise
Calculate the wavelength in meter for a visible light wave of frequency 6 x 10 8
Megahertz & velocity 3 x 108 m/s.
Frequency = 6 x 108 x 106 = 6 x1014 Hz
λ =V ÷ F = (3 x 108) ÷ (6 x1014) = 0.5 x 10-6 meter.
