1. Newton’s law of cooling states that the rate of change of the temperature of an object is
proportional to the difference between its own temperature and the surrounding
temperature. Assume that T (t ) is the temperature of an object at time t and Ts is
surrounding temperature.
a) Derive the differential equation based on the Newton’s law of cooling
b) Show that the solution of differential equation in (a) is
T (t ) = Ts + Ae− kt
where A and k are constants.
2. At 11.00 am, initial temperature of a cake is 85°C. After 10 minutes, the cake cools to
60°C. Given that the room temperature is 25°C. Determine when will be the cake cool to
32°C.
3. A corpse was discovered in a motel at midnight and it temperature at that time was 80°F.
The room temperature is 60°F. Two hours later the temperature of the corpse dropped to
75°F. Known that the normal body temperature is 98.6°F. Find the time of the corpse death.
4. A bowl of noodle had just boiled at 100°C is allowed to cool on a kitchen counter with
constant temperature, 20°C at 2.00 pm. After five minutes, the noodle cooled to 60°C.
When will be the noodle to cool down to 22°C?
5. A body of an apparent homicide victim was found in a room that was kept as a constant
temperature, 70°F. At 12 noon, the temperature of the body was 80°F and at 1 pm it was
75°F. Assume that the temperature of the body at the time of death was 98.6°F. Determine
the time of death.
6. A container of hot liquid is placed in a room with temperature 19°C. The liquid takes 8
minutes to cool from 83°C to 62°C. How long does it takes for the liquid to cool from 62°C
to 41°C?
8. A can of drink with initial temperature 30°C is placed in a refrigerator with an internal
temperature of 2°C at 5.00 pm. After 10 minutes the can temperature decreased to 25°C .
When will the can become 10°C ?
