mMMW ASSIGNMENT in LESSON 1 WEEK 1

Course Code and Title: MAT100 – MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN

WORLD
Lesson 1 Week 1
Topic: PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN NATURE
AND THE WORLD

ASSIGNMENT: DO THIS

DIRECTION: Copy and answer in a one whole sheet of yellow pad

paper.
Copy the whole box before answering.

1. List five (5) importance of mathematics in our world and give your
own example.
2. • Math is useful in finance, for example. Every day, my mom and I go
to the wet market to buy food for our daily dinner. Part of the
grocery shopping process involves applying mathematics to
calculate the cost and quantity of things we need to buy.
3. • Time management, for example. Since having good time
management skills is essential for students, I set aside time each day
to determine when to start and finish assignments. I split up my
time discreetly so that I could do my schoolwork.
4. • Mathematical reasoning improves problem-solving abilities, for
example. I'm having a difficulty with my brother, and I'm using math
to help me think rationally and analytically of a method that my
brother and I can come to a decision that would benefit the both of
us.
 Cooking – Ex. I cook Adobo last month, I portion/measure vinegar
and soy sauce, sugar, and other seasoning so that it will taste good.
To stay current in the world of money that we inhabit. We can cope
and live with mathematics in this world where it is ubiquitous. For
example. loan repayment, transportation, washing, and a host of
other tasks.
Copy and answer the following series of operations:
a. - 8 + 15 /3 + 19(- 3) – 9 =-69
b. 12 + (-5) + 7 + 5 = 19
c. - 4 ∙ -3 (-5) (-3)3 – 7 ∙ 62 + 82 – 6 3 = 1234
d. (- 5)2 (10) – {8 – 6(- 3 + 52 – 2) + 6} – 3 =253
e. 29 + 9 - (0.75) + 10 + (-0.25) = 47

5. Cut out 5 pictures of anything around us that show patterns and

paste them in 1 short bond paper. Name and explain each.

6. Solve and show your solution. Find the next number in each list:

1. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, ____28__

2. 5, 11, 17, 23, 29, 35, ___41___
3. 3, 5, 9, 15, 23, 33, ____45__
4. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, ___49___
5. 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, ____216__
