Criticism Of Taguchi Method of Quality Control
Genichi Taguchi was an
engineer and statistician. From
the 1950s onwards, Taguchi
developed a methodology for
applying statistics to improve
the quality of manufactured
goods.

He is known as the Father of the

“Taguchi Method” and “Robust
Engineering”
The Taguchi Method
The Taguchi method is a quality control method that uses
statistical measurements and analysis to optimize the
performance of a product or process.
The Taguchi method is used to optimize the performance of a
product or process by minimizing the impact of variations and
noise. As previously mentioned, the Taguchi method, or robust
design method, is used to design products and processes that
are resistant to changes in the manufacturing process,
environment, and various user behaviors.
HISTORY OF TAGUCHI METHOD
Genichi Taguchi, a Japanese engineer and statistician, began
formulating the Taguchi method while developing a
telephone-switching system for Electrical Communication
Laboratory, a Japanese company, in the 1950s. Using
statistics, he aimed to improve the quality of manufactured
goods.

By the 1980s, Taguchi's ideas began gaining prominence in

the Western world, leading him to become well-known in the
United States, having already enjoyed success in his native
Japan. Big-name global companies such as Toyota Motor
Corp., Ford Motor Co., Boeing Co., and Xerox Holdings Corp.
have adopted his methods.
IMPLEMENTATION OF TAGUCHI METHOD
Step 1: Problem Definition
The first step in putting the Taguchi Method into action is to clearly define the
problem or quality characteristic that needs to be addressed. A specific
performance parameter, such as product dimensions, weight, or strength,
could be used.
Step 2: Design of Experiments (DOE)
The following step is to design and carry out controlled experiments to
investigate the effects of controllable factors, also known as parameters, on
the quality characteristic.
Step 3: Data Collection and Analysis
After the experiments are completed, the data must be organized and
analyzed. To analyze the data and identify the significant factors that affect
the quality characteristic, statistical techniques such as analysis of variance
(ANOVA) and signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio calculations are used.
Step 4: Parameter Design
The next step is to determine the optimal levels of the controllable factors, or
parameters, that will result in the desired quality characteristic based on the
results of the data analysis.
Step 5: Tolerance Design
Appropriate tolerances for the controllable factors, or parameters, must be
determined to ensure that the robust design can withstand inevitable
variation and noise in manufacturing and usage conditions.
Step 6: Verification and Validation
After determining the optimal parameter settings and tolerances, the robust
design must be verified and validated. This may entail carrying out
additional experiments or simulations to ensure that the design is indeed
robust and capable of performing well under a variety of conditions. We will
go over the significance of verification and validation in ensuring the robust
design’s effectiveness.
What are some examples of the Taguchi meth
in action?
The Taguchi method has been used in various industries to optimize the
quality of products or processes. For instance:

A chemical company applied it to reduce the variation and enhance the

yield of a polymerization process by adjusting temperature, pressure,
catalyst, and initiator levels.
A car manufacturer used it to improve the fuel efficiency and decrease
the emissions of a diesel engine through changing injection pressure,
injection timing, compression ratio, and exhaust gas recirculation.
A hospital employed this method to improve patient satisfaction and
reduce waiting time in an emergency department by varying staffing,
triage, layout, and communication.
Criticism of the Taguchi Method of Quality
Control
Taguchi’s methods have not always been well received by Western
statisticians. One of the biggest accusations against his quality control
methodology is that it is unnecessarily complicated. In fact, some skeptics
even claim that a doctorate in mathematics is required to understand it.
