METHODS OF PLANT PRODUCTION

BEED-III
PLANT PRODUCTION
 The plant production system
encompasses the basic genetic and
physiological regulations
on plant growth.
 The impact on growth of soil,
water, nutrients, disease and pests
and the influence of management
processes.
What are the 4 needs of plants?
Plants, like all living organisms, have basic needs: a
source of nutrition (food), water, space in which to
live, air, and optimal temperatures in order to grow and
reproduce. For most plants, these needs are
summarized as Known by the acronym LAWN
Light
Air
Water and
Nutrients
What type of nutrients do plants need?

• Soil is a major source of nutrients needed by

plants for growth. The three main nutrients
are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)
and potassium (K). Together they make up the
trio known as NPK. Other important nutrients
are calcium, magnesium and sulfur.
What type of soil is best for plant growth?
Loam soils

Loam soils are best for plant growth because sand, silt,
and clay together provide desirable characteristics. First, the
different-sized particles leave spaces in the soil for air and water
to flow and roots to penetrate.
Two Basic Method of planting

1 .DIRECT SEEDING
2.TRANSPLANTING
Direct Seeding.
• Direct seeding, a crop
establishment method where pre-germinated
seeds are sown directly onto the soil surface,
can help address high labor cost in rice
farming.
PRE-GERMINATED SEEDS
There are three methods of planting crops by
direct seeding:

1. broadcast,
2. hill,
3. drill.
BROADCAST SEEDING
broadcast seeding is a method of seeding that
involves scattering seed, by hand or
mechanically, over a relatively large.
DRILL
The drill method of planting is another technique of
direct seeding by which seeds are released
continuously in a row while moving forward at uniform
speed. The release of seeds is analogous to pouring
water from a bottle with a small opening until water is
completely exhausted.
HILL PLANTING
Planting "in hills" is a term used for the method
of planting certain vegetable seeds in clusters. ...
When they are planted in raised mounds, 4 to 6
inches high, the advantage is that the soil warms
up faster and drains better, and water that
collects around the base encourages roots to
feed more deeply.
WHAT ARE THE VEGETABLE GOODS TO
GROW IN HILLSIDES?
TRANSPLANTING
Transplanting is the process of moving a fully
germinated seedling (or mature plant) and
replanting it in a permanent location for the
growing season. Transplanting is an important
part of agribusiness in northern climates
because it extends the flowering or fruit bearing
season of many plants
MATERIALS NEEDS IN TRANSPLANTING
WHY DO WE USED TRANSPLATING INSTEAD OF DIRECT
SEEDLING METHOD?

Transplants minimize weed pressure by allowing

plants less time in the ground and, with many
crops, not having plants in the ground when
weeds germinate.
