CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT STRATEGIES

LECTURE 3 (Part 2)
Prepared By
RUMANA TASNIM
Hybrid Channel Assignment
• Hybrid Channel Allocation is a combination of both
Fixed Channel Allocation (FCA) and Dynamic Channel
Allocation (DCA).

• The total number of channels or voice channels are

divided into fixed and dynamic set.
Hybrid Channel Assignment
• When a user makes a call then first fixed set of
channels are utilized but if all the fixed sets are busy
then dynamic sets are used.

• The main purpose of HCA is to work efficiently under

heavy traffic and to maintain a minimum signal
interference.
RULES FOR CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT

 Do not assign co-channels or adjacent channels at the

same cell site (not applicable for CDMA).

 Do not assign co-channels in adjacent cell sites (not

applicable for CDMA).

 Do not mix and match channel groups in a cell or sector.

RULES FOR CHANNEL ASSIGNMENT

 Avoid adjacent channel assignment in adjacent cell sites

(not applicable for CDMA).

 Maintain proper channel separation for any channel

assignment for a sector or site.

 Maximize the distance between reusing cell sites.

Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD)
• Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) is a technique
where the transmitter and receiver operate at
different carrier frequencies.

• For instance, in mobile wireless networks, one block

of spectrum is allocated for uplink, which carries data
from mobile phones to a base station while another is
allocated for downlink.
Simplex & Duplex Channel
• Simplex communication is a communication channel
that sends information in one direction only.

• A duplex communication channel requires

two simplex channels operating in opposite
directions. For example, in TV and radio broadcasting,
information flows only from the transmitter site to
multiple receivers.
Example 1 : A total of 33 MHz bandwidth is allocated to a FDD
cellular system with two 25 KHz simplex channels to provide full
duplex voice and control channels. Compute the number of
channels available per cell if the system uses (a) 4 cell reuse
technique. Assume 1 MHz of spectrum is allocated to control
channels. Give a distribution of voice and control channels.
Solution:
One duplex channel = 2 x 25 = 50 kHz of spectrum.
Hence, the total available duplex channels are
= 33 MHz / 50 kHz
= 660 in number.

Among these channels, 1 MHz / 50 kHz = 20 channels are kept as

control channels.

(a) For N = 4, total channels per cell = 660/4 =165.
