3 Related statements of

Conditional statements
Every conditional statement
has three (3) related
statements Converse,
Inverse and Contrapositive
Forms:
Converse

The converse of a conditional statement is formed by

interchanging the hypothesis and the conclusion. For
instance, the converse of p→ q is q→p (If q, then p). It may
also be true or false.
Converse
Examples:
Conditional statement :
Form: (If p, then q)
If you live in Davao, then you live in Mindanao. True

Converse:
Form: (if q, then p)
If you live in Mindanao, then you live in Davao. False

this example the conditional is true, the

converse is false.
Converse
Another examples:
Conditional statement ( p - q ) :
If you are a native kapampangan, then you are born in pampanga TRUE

Converse (q - p ):
If you are born in pampanga, then you are a native kapampangan TRUE

In this case both Conditional and converse are TRUE

If the conditional and Converse are both TRUE it can be considered as

Biconditional statement.
Biconditional statement.
Biconditional statement is when the two statements are true and can be
combined using "If and only if".
Example:
Conditional statement (p - q):
If you are a lawyer, then you passed the bar exam.

Converse (q - p):
If you passed the bar exam, then you are a lawyer.

Biconditional Statement:
You are a lawyer if and only if you passed the bar exam.
Inverse

The inverse of a conditional statement is formed by negating

both the hypothesis and conclusion. For instance, the inverse of
p ~ q is ~p ~ q (If not p, then not q).
Inverse
Examples:
Conditional statement (if p, then q):
If you live in Davao, then you live in Mindanao.

Inverse (if not p, then not q):

If you do not live in Davao, then you do not live in Mindanao.
Contrapositive

The contrapositive of a conditional statement is formed by

interchanging the hypothesis and conclusion and negating
both. For instance, the contrapositive of p→ q is ~q→~p (If not
q, then not p).
Contrapositive
Example:
Conditional statement (if p, then q):
If you live in Davao, then you live in Mindanao.

Contrapositive (if not q, then not p):

If you do not live in Mindanao, then you do not live in Davao.
!! REMEMBER !! Converse
q-p
{if q, then p}

Conditional statement Inverse

p-q -p - -q
{if p, then q} {if not p, then not q}

Contrapositive
-q - -p
{if not q, then not p}
More examples
Write the conditional statement in the if-then form. Then
state it’s converse, inverse and contrapositive.

Conditional statement:
If a polygon is a square, then it is a quadrilateral True

Converse: If a polygon is quadrilateral, then it is a square False

Inverse: If a polygon is not square, then it is not a quadrilateral False

Contrapositive: If a polygon is not a quadrilateral, then it is not a square True

Why are we identifying if the given
statements are true or false?
Logically statement
If a conditional statement is true and one of the other
statements related to it is also true. then they are said to be
logically equivalent.
Conditional statement: If a polygon is a square, then it is a quadrilateral true
Converse: If a polygon is quadrilateral, then it is a square False
False
Inverse: If a polygon is not square, then it is not a quadrilateral

Contrapositive: If a polygon is not a quadrilateral, then it is not a square

true
The converse and inverse of the
The conditional statement is conditional statement are logically
logically equivalent to its equivalent to each other, but neither
them is logically equivalent to
contrapositive.

True or false
6.Two statements are logically equivalent if they have the same truth.
7. Converse is formed by negating both hypothesis and conclusion.
8. Contrapositive is formed by Interchanging and negating both hypothesis snd
