Conditional sentences have two clauses:  a condition (if...) and a
result.  The verb tenses used in each clause depends on whether the
speaker thinks the result is probable (real) or only exists in the
imagination (unreal).

Conditional Statement
A conditional statement is a statement that can be written
in the form “if p, then q” .
Symbol:

p → q can be read as “p implies q”

p is the hypothesis part of a conditional statement following the word if.
q is the conclusion part of a conditional statement following the word
then.
Example:
1. If today is Monday, then tomorrow is Tuesday.

Hypothesis Conclusion

Hypothesis Today is Monday.

Conclusion Tomorrow is Tuesday.

Identify the hypothesis and conclusion of each
conditional.
2. If today is January 10, then today is Hinugyaw
Festival. Hypothesis: Today is January 10.
Conclusion: Today is Hinugyaw Festival.
3. If it is 9:30 a.m., then it must be daytime.
Hypothesis: It is 9:30 a.m.
Conclusion: It must be daytime.
4. The number is a rational number if it is an
integer. Hypothesis: The number is an integer.
Conclusion: The number is a rational number.

both exchanging and negating the hypothesis and
conclusion.
