Objective
To place emphasis on reducing the amount of
plastic waste produced, source-segregating it,
recycling it, enlisting the help of waste processors,
recyclers, and waste pickers to collect the plastic
waste fraction from households or other sources of
production, as well as from intermediate material
recovery facilities, and to adopt the polluter-pays
principle in order to ensure the sustainability of the
waste management system.

(5.2) The Extended Producer Responsibility
Guidelines covers the following with respect to
plastic packaging namely: -
(i) Reuse;
(ii) Recycling;
(iii) Use of recycled plastic content;
(iv) End of life disposal.
Micro-plastics and Biodegradable Plastics
• Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are less than 5 millimeters in size. These
microplastics pose a significant threat to the environment and human health as they can
accumulate in the food chain and affect wildlife and marine ecosystems.

• To address this issue, many companies and researchers are developing biodegradable
plastics that can break down into natural components, reducing their impact on the
environment. Biodegradable plastics alternatives include plant-based bio plastics,
compostable plastics, and bio-derived plastics, which can decompose through natural
processes.

• However, it is important to note that biodegradable plastics are not a complete solution
to the plastic pollution problem, as they still require proper disposal and may not
degrade under certain conditions. Therefore, reducing the consumption and use of
plastic products, as well as increasing recycling and proper waste management
practices, remain crucial steps in addressing the plastic pollution crisis.
Amendment – March 2018
• The amended Rules lay down that the phasing
out of Multi-layered Plastic (MLP) is now
applicable to MLP, which are non-recyclable, or
non-energy recoverable , or with no alternate
use.
Amendment – Aug 2021
• Carry bag made of virgin or recycled plastic,
shall not be less than fifty microns in thickness.
Amendment – Sept 2021
• Seventy five microns in thickness with effect
from, the 30th September, 2021 and one
hundred and twenty (120) microns in thickness
with effect from the 31st December, 2022.
Amendment – Feb 2022
• Single use plastic will be phased out by July
2022. Any plastic packaging which can not be
recycled or used as alternate source of energy
will be phased out.
Amendment – July 2022
• The Union environment ministry has issued
Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2022, in view
of single-use plastic products from July 1 and
the mandate to increase the thickness of plastic
carry bags to over 120 microns from December
31.
 What I personally learnt
while making this PPT
Implementation Tough Rules are great if
is weak to understand ensured execution

There is billion tons of plastic
waste in the seas and even
though our laws are in place still
plastic waste is increasing
I tried reading the rules and the
statement are not so simple as it
seem for a new startup or regular
business owner, no one cares to
follow.
If implemented to the word
it will help us curb lot of
plastic problems.
