KS3 Light

1) Can you remember the three phenomena that all waves show?

R_____________________ R_____________________ D__________________

2) Look at the diagram below. When you look at a pencil in water it appears bent.

This is due to refraction.

Can you add the rays of the path

of light from the pencil to the
water surface?

Can you add the path of the light

that our brain thinks it is seeing?

3) In exams you a likely to be asked to draw the path of a light ray through a glass block.

Can you draw on the path of a ray of light

through the block. Use a ruler because light
always travels in straight lines. The normals will
also help you draw the correct path of light.
4)

Look at the jelly lens above. What happens to the straight light rays as they leave
the more optically dense jelly into the less optically dense air. The lens in your eye is
like jelly.

a) Can you say what happens to the rays of light after the jelly?

b) What do we call the point X?

c) Why would this be useful in a microscope?

I hope you go an explore light this summer
