Several companies now suggest that space travel may happen sooner than
we thought. While the more adventurous are likely to jump at the chance of
such an exciting experience, others are less enthusiastic. We asked three
people to give us 0 ___their____ views on space travel.
A: Yoshie, 27
It’d be amazing to fly into space and look back at the Earth. I’ve heard some
astronauts say how they felt overwhelmed by the sight. I’ve been interested in
space since I was a child. I wish I 1 __________ been around to see the moon
landings on TV. My grandparents say it was quite amazing. An aspect which
worries me though is safety. A lot could go wrong and I think I might worry 2
__________ much. For me to seriously consider 3 __________ a trip, I’d want
to feel extremely safe so I definitely wouldn’t be first in the queue!
B: Leyla, 45
Technology and materials science are progressing quickly. A 4 __________
companies think that regular space travel could become a reality within a
decade. Others say it might take longer. However, this would require an
enormous financial expenditure, not to mention time. Also, governments often
change, 5 __________ can stop progress on such large-scale projects. Few
countries could afford a project of this scale. 6 __________, if governments
wanted space travel to become a reality, I’m sure places like the USA or
China would find the money somehow. If I had the opportunity to take a space
flight, I’d probably say yes, but I imagine it’ll be too expensive for me.

In my view, space travel is not something that human beings should be
focused on. It would use much more energy 7 __________ travelling by plane
does now, so it is extremely bad for the environment. Some environmental
campaigners say that only rich people actually want this. For me, there are
other things that we should be focusing on 8 __________ as climate change
and poverty. If we spent more money on these problems, the world would be
a better place. I understand that exploring space benefits society, but
astronauts exploring space is not the same as space tourism. As we know
from tourism on Earth, 9 __________ causes a lot of pollution. It would be no
different in space. Having millions of people flying around in rockets is likely to
magnify the issue. The atmosphere is polluted more than enough already.
