CATHY’S JOURNAL ENTRIES

Purposive

Ms. Cathy is clear about her purpose in her work. She wants to encourage and help the
farmers in Benguet with the various uses of Azolla as a fertilizer and weed suppressant
which can help them to save money. That’s why she goes to Atok, Benguet to visit the
Azolla site. They promoted the farmer to use organic fertilizers as the government told
them, but it is not easy to convince the farmers because they doubted the government
the defeated barangay captain blocked their moves and telling they are making them
robots “guinea pigs” that point they had a misunderstanding and they were not listened
to but Cathy in her best voice, spoke and came forward to explain that they are not
dictating and seek not to be understood and be appreciated but to just share information
that can help improve their state of living and decisions it still up to them.

On her birthday December 8, 1980, she celebrates it in Benguet on the same day as the
coming of Dr. Stella as a new barangay doctor. Ms. Cathy Martinez and Dr. Stella both
encourage people to don’t just rely on their belief in their ancestors to look over their
health because there is already a doctor in their midst who can help them with their
health problems. They created a campaign theme: Visit Doctor Telay.

Pragmatic

Ms. Cathy’s promotion of Azolla seems successful, and it happens because on the day
of her birthday December 8, 1980. Manong Tinoy’s wife cooked “kilawing manok” and
made a fresh vegetable salad using vegetables fertilized with Azolla compost. Later on,
the other people started trusting her and believed she had sincere intentions.
Her campaign and Dr. Stella's were successful too, their hard work paid off. Even on
Christmas day people were still visiting them and a lot of Telay’s patients invited them
for a drink of ”tsokolate”. They are not just helping people but also, they can build a
good relationship with them.

Value-Driven

Ms. Cathy is driven by her values in her work, because of her sincerity to help and hard
work her campaign on Azolla and Health care with Dr. Stella was successful, she is also
friendly and approachable she can easily adapt too with the environment and get along
with the people in Benguet that’s why the people liked her and were good to her.
