FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (IM-405)

COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEM

Problem Statement: Design a mechanical component or a simple mechanical assembly
needs to be analyzed in real world scenario.

GUIDE LINES:
 The assignment can be taken in a Group of 4 students only.
 The assignment can be completed using only Ansys Mechanical Apdl software.
 The assignment is aimed to be a self-learning and self-guided problem wherein each group
decides their own objective and works to get a relevant outcome themselves.
 The problem selection is to be done by the students based on a mechanical component or a
simple mechanical assembly and the part or assembly needs to be analyzed in real world
scenario.
 Each Group shall have a unique part and therefore will work on a unique problem.
 The parameters will be taken as default if otherwise fixed by selection. The selection of
parameters are to be researched by catalogues or by other means and applied to the
part/assembly.
 The main aim of the project is simulate various loading conditions and see its effect on parts
and assembly. Here under the case of realistic loading condition a part is analyzed and
stresses and deformation studied.
 Meshing to be carried out first coarser and iteratively proceeding to finer mesh. The result of
convergence to be shown in graph form for all obtained analysis.
 Analysis performed should complement the finding by calculations i.e. first calculate your
answers and see if the simulations come close to it.
 The outcome is to be provided in an elaborate report with all graphs and pictures of relevant
findings (such as Von Mises stresses, displacement etc.)
 The findings are to be emphasized in the report with elaborative discussion on it while relevant
reference to research material (if any).
 The report shall be submitted to the teacher in the 14th week of classes of the semester so that
the project can be marked.
REPORT CONTENTS:
 The report format is as follow:
o Introductory Page with title
o Table of Contents with Page Numbers
o Introduction to topic
o Body of Project
o Results and Findings
o Discussion on findings
o Conclusion and further research direction
o References

Total Marks:15 [Report(10) +Presentation(5)]
