Definition of terms

To explain the concepts in this study, the important terms used in this study have been

defined.

The following terms are:

English Language Pronunciation This term refers to the development of English

pronunciation proficiency of Grade 8 students of St. Michaele’s College. The aim of the study

is to analyze the impact of the English pronunciation skills on students and how to develop

their pronunciation skills.

Macro skills This term refers to macro skills that are most commonly referred to

English language and refer to listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening effectively

improves personal relationships through the reduction of conflict and strengthens cooperation

through a collective understanding. Writing is the creation of meaning, where the information

derived from it can then be passed on. Speaking is vocalization of human communication.

Reading is a means of language acquisition in the communicative process. Reading can also

significantly improve other micro skills such as spelling, evaluative processes and the

imagination.

Interest This term refers how interest is a powerful motivational process that energizes

learning students, guides academic and inspiration towards academic success.

Society This term refers to society that supervises the school and its various

components with the purpose of bringing improvement in the school, teachers, and students.

Through regular supervision, it ensures proper and smooth functioning of the school. Thus, it is
also able to root out what the student learns from surroundings and experiences which in turn

help them grow and evolve to have a better personality.


Significance of the study

This study will be undertaken to find out the learner’s difficulties in pronouncing the English

language and how we can assess the learners to develop their pronunciation.

Benefiting the study are the various sectors as follows:

Students This research study helps students as it broadens their minds and develops

emotional skills. Moreover, the use of English as an International language is growing with time

because it is the only medium for communication in many countries.

Teachers This research study introduced the key terms before a lesson, utilizing

pictures with new vocabulary words, and assessing background knowledge are all ways

teachers can help engage English language learners with academic language.

Macro skills This research study provides the students with macro skills as needed in

order to communicate and understands each other. Mastering these skills will help a learner

become more competent in speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and spelling.

Community This research study contributes the community as this is one of the main

forces that shapes individuals' beliefs, values, and behaviors. The community perceptions can

influence students at many levels especially at the level of learning foreign languages.

Therefore, this study aims to examine and analyze how community perception of community

can influence the students' willingness to learn and use English language.
Statement of the Problem

This research study was designed to provide significant and definite information about the

English language pronunciation skills among the grade 8 students of St. Michael’s College.

The researchers wanted to identify why students straggle to pronounce certain words in

English language as well as to know how to develop their pronunciation skills. The researcher

further seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of students in terms of;

a. Age

b. Gender

c. Year

d. Ethnicity

2. What is the problem with English pronunciation?

3. How do students improve his or her English pronunciation?

4. Which English skill do you like most?

b. Listening

5. What do you think is the most difficult part in speaking English?

c. Vocabulary

Conceptual Framework

This research study aimed to improve and enhance pronunciation skills through speech

lessons among Grade 8 students of St. Michael’s College. In conducting speech lessons, the

instructor should be resourceful in creating activities for students to actively participate in the

discussion. Considering that Grade 8 students are having a hard time pronouncing unfamiliar

English words with a unique spelling. Hence, speech lesson helps them to improve their

pronunciation skills through activities such as tongue twister and presenting unusual words, as

well as reciting and performing English words/language. The schematic diagram below

presented the independent variables which included the demographic profile of the

respondents particularly their age, gender, year level, ethnicity and cultural background. The

dependent variables, on the other hand is the macro skills where the students can use to

improve and enhance their language.
