CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

Research Design
This research study used phenomenological design as it addresses the problem
of teenage suicide attempts by disclosing and exploring their lived experiences and
subjective perspectives of individuals involved, including the teenagers themselves,
their families, and communities. Overall, this research design would provide valuable
insights into the experiences of teenagers who attempted suicide and help to raise
awareness into our teenagers mental health.

Research Locale
This study will be conducted at Malaybalay City, Bukidnon where the participants
are currently residing. The City of Malaybalay, is a 1st class component city and
capital of the province of Bukidnon, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has
a population of 190,712 people.
Participants of the study
There are five participants who were purposely appointed to the study. These
participants are currently living around Malaybalay City. The researchers have
chosen them purposefully because, in their teenage years,they are very depressed
and suicidal.The participants of the study should be 13 to 19 years old. Their
educational background is that of high school graduates or high school students.
They experienced anxiety, depression, a lack of inspiration, and suicidal attempts.

Data Collection Method


Engaged semi-structured interviews with a subset of participants to gain deeper
insights into their mental health. This is a good way to get in-depth information from
a smaller group of people. You can conduct interviews in person, over the phone, or
online. In order to compile information of the disclose the experiences of teenagers
who have attempted suicide, the semi-structured interview results will be evaluated.
To protect the participants' privacy and make sure it doesn't hurt them, all
information gathered will be kept private.

Validation Instrument
The research instrument in this study is a researcher's-made questionnaire. The
questionnaire focuses on teenagers who had previously attempted suicide to assess
the instrument's clarity, comprehensiveness, and relevance to their experiences. The
study will be validated by experts such as psychiatrists, DSWDs, and nurses/doctors.

Research Ethics
During the implementation of the study, the researchers will maintain a formal
approach when interacting with the participants, they will put the participants’ privacy
first and will not intrude without getting their consent first. Participants’ identities and
personal information will be secured, and any information collected from them will be
managed with strict confidentiality. They will also ensure that the research is not
harmful for the participants. The respondents’participation will be completely
voluntary. To sum up, each participant will receive respect and equality.
Data Analysist
Following the completion of the semi-structured interviews, the collected data will
undergo thematic analysis. This analytical method involves examining the qualitative
data to identify recurring themes and concepts. The process begins by transcribing
and organizing the interview recordings or notes. Subsequently, the data will be
systematically coded to categorize responses and extract significant information
regarding the participants' experiences, emotions, and perceptions related to their
suicide attempts. Thematic analysis aims to uncover meaningful insights from the
data, providing a comprehensive understanding of the participants' narratives and
perspectives.

Data Gathering Procedure


The researchers will write a consent letter to the Office of the school principal of
Malaybalay City Senior High School for their consent to conduct the study.Upon the
approval,the researchers will then identify the three mental health professionals that
will assist them in evaluating and validating their semi-structured questionnaires in
order to collect the necessary data.The study will be conducted twice a week with
five participants to answer the questions provided by the researchers that are related
to the study.The results will be analyzed using the thematic method and interpreted
for reliability.
