Explanation About the Importance of INTEGRATING TRADITIONAL PRACTICES in Modern

Management and Research. Basically, there are two major fields where traditional practices may be
applied.
Agriculture – Most farmers in many countries have adopted the practice of monocropping in
order to have a continuous source of farm produce to satisfy the specific demand of the market. Lately,
they discovered that monocropping gradually depletes the soil of certain nutrients after relying heavily
on the use of fertilizers and other chemicals in order to increase the productivity of their soil. They
found out that after many years, the soil turned out to be acidic and infertile. They now recommend the
practice of CROP ROTATION, which can radically improve the soil structure and organic matter in the
soil and will reduce erosion and increase farm system resilience. This was a traditional agricultural
practice since the 6,000 B.C., when they alternately planted legumes and cereals. In China, particularly
during the Eastern Zhou period, they adopted the two-field rotation system, half the land was planted in
a particular year while the other half lay fallow or unplanted. In the next year, the two fields were
reversed. Modern agriculture now encourages the use of this traditional practice which has proven to
be efficient and reliable. Now, many farmers have increased their annual yield and earned more
money.
Medicine – For so long, Western Medicine did not consider the benefits of ACUPUNCTURE.
They considered it as a form of mythical practice, superstition or a form of witchcraft for many centuries
because needles are pierced through the skin of vital parts of the human body. It was practiced in
China for 4,500 years. However, In the 1970s it gradually gained acceptance but it was only in 1992
did the United States of America and other western nations officially recognize the medical benefits of
this century long practice in the Eastern Hemisphere. They created the new Branch of Medicine which
they called as ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE. Now acupuncture is highly recommended to be used
particularly to reduce anxiety, pain and seizure during surgery or operation. It has also been proven to
be an efficient cure for nausea and chronic attacks of epilepsy and seizures. It is reported that many
patients suffering from pain today now resort to acupuncture instead of taking aspirin. The same thing
is true with Lagundi. LAGUNDI has been a traditional cure for colds and coughs for hundreds of years
in the Philippines but it was only introduced as a principal component in modern cough medicines by
Pascual Laboratories in 1996. Now we have a more effective and less costly medicine for coughs.
