LIA3002: INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC INTERNATIONAL LAW

Session: 2023/2024 Semester 2

Group Assignment Question:

Consider the following statement:

History not learned from is bound to be repeated. Rules of international law, for all their
ambiguities, gaps, and limitations, are a principal example of human beings trying to
learn from history. Those who exert power in the world have a duty and responsibility to
be caretakers of our aspirations to be better. Complying with these rules is the ideal but
defending these previously agreed-upon principles is the bare minimum that we demand
from governments worldwide. And those who claim to be international law practitioners
have a duty and responsibility to voice this demand publicly and vocally. If we are
unable to attain this bare minimum, then what are we doing? We have learned nothing
and we are no better than the worst that came before us.

Do you agree with the above statement? Give your reasons with primary reference to
the nature of international law and the ongoing atrocities and risk of famine in Gaza.
