INTRODUCTION
There are lots of natural calamities we are facing throughout the year.
Some of them are floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes,
volcanic eruptions, etc. Well today we are discussing about earthquake
and also learning to make earthquake detector. As a student we must
learn about earthquake, how it occurs and protection.

EARTHQUAKE
Earthquake is a natural disaster in which earth shakes. This cause mass
destruction as its magnitude. Earthquake is measured via special typed of
device known as seismograph.

CAUSES OF EARTHQUAKE
There are four types of earthquake according to its formation. Some time
tectonic plates inside earth are displaced that occurs vacuum due to
which some part of earth falls that cause earthquake. When there is
volcanic eruption that brings shaking of earth. Some time collapsing of
two different big bodies also causes quack. Now a day we have developed
different big explosives like nuclear bomb. The explosion of such
explosive may also introduce earthquake.

EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE
When earthquake occurs then normally this brings many natural
calamities. When this comes near human settlement then this may take
humans life. There are lots of human loses due to earthquake. Some time
it may introduce other disaster such as landslide, tsunami that may also
disrupt human life.

EARTHQUAKE ALARM:
Earthquake detector or an earthquake alarm is a device that senses
earthquake and alerts people so that they can move for safety. We can find
a lot of earthquake detectors in the market. Some smart phone apps are
also exists. But it would be best if it is made at our house or at school. This
detector helps to alert us from earthquake so that we can make plan for
future. Many times this alarm can be life saver too. With simple materials
and science concept we can easily make this cool alarm. This earthquake
detector also can be great science project that can be demonstrated at
science fairs

MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR EARTHQUAKE

ALARM
▪ One cardboard with length 15cm and breadth of 11cm.
▪ Two cardboard’s with length of 15cm and breadth of 2cm.
▪ Four cardboard’s
▪ With 107cm length and breadth of 2cm.
▪ Two cardboard’s with length of 3cm and breadth of 2cm.
▪ And lastly one cardboard having length 4cm and breadth of 2cm.
▪ 9 volt battery or a 1.5 volt battery or an adapter (for main power).
▪ Three small metal nuts or a stone or metal balls or marbles.
▪ Buzzer
▪ LED, a switch and a wire connector that has hole.
▪ Hot melting glue, color paper, knife, metal scale, etc.

PROCEDURE
▪ First of all cut all the cardboard as above measurements. For this
we have used a diy mat, a metal scale and X-ACTO knife.
▪ With the help of hot melting glue we have glued the base of
earthquake detector.
▪ As base is ready now make two towers. One small where we fix
buzzer and other higher.
▪ Now arrange the wire as in below video. We make a small hole at
the higher tower. Where we pass naked wire. At the end of this wire
we have fixed three small metal nut. This makes wire vertically
inclined. At the middle of this wire we put a metal hook having
circular space at the middle. (Note when the wire touches this hook
circuit is completed that cause ringing of buzzer and light will glow
concurrently.)
▪ We fixed a 9 volt battery one end of base which is connects to
battery connector. One end of battery connector is connected to
higher tower. And next is connected to switch, buzzer, led and
finally to the hook.
▪ Now when the switch is on and if wire touches the round hook then
circuit is completed and buzzer is ring with glowing of led.
▪ Note (My friend there is things to understand i.e, led and buzzer are
a diode. Which means that they pass current in only one direction.)
We have to take in mind that current must be flow as rated or
indexed.

ADVANTAGES
Earthquakes strike without much warning. It may harm badly
designed & constructed buildings killing its inhabitants The device which
you are developing an earthquake detector help you wake up and alert the
moment of the quake and move towards the safer side. The Quake Alarm
can eliminate confusion, save valuable seconds and provide peace of
mind. This device was said to be very accurate and would detect
earthquakes from far and would not rely on shaking or movement in a
location.

DISADVANTAGES
• Timing
The window of time from the
announcement of an Earthquake Early
Warning until the arrival of the main
tremors is very short, i.e. a matter of
seconds (or between several seconds
and a few tens of seconds). In areas that
are close to the focus of the earthquake,
the warning may not be transmitted
before strong tremors hit.
• False alarms
When using data from only one
seismograph, false Earthquake Early
Warnings may occur as a result of
noise from accidents, lightning or
device failure.

• Magnitude estimation
There are limits to the accuracy of
estimating magnitude, especially for
large earthquakes. It is difficult to
separate earthquake sand provide
accurate warnings when multiple
earthquakes occur almost
simultaneously or in close proximity to
each other.

• Seismic intensity estimation

There are limits to the accuracy of estimating seismic intensity by
statistical attenuation formula, as well as limits to the prediction of land
surface amplification.
CONCLUSION
Earthquake detector basically helps to alarm human beings from an
upcoming earthquake so that we can take some precautionary action to
prevent both human lives and extensive damage to property.
